Follow the Moon: November 15, 2018 - November 21

Moon enters Pisces 10:41 pm CST
November 15—First Quarter Moon: Sprouting.
At the new Moon, lunar seeds were planted in Scorpio’s compost-rich soil. The losses, confessions, exposures, rages, and empowerments of this last year of Jupiter in Scorpio has produced a fertile field
for our magical intentions seeded at the Scorpio new Moon on November 7. For a week, these seeds have trembled and sought their anchor in the fertile dark. Now, those seeds have gathered enough life force to emerge. What did you plant? What needs your tending now? At the first quarter phase, we fight off challenges to our tender shoots. It is important to remember that the unseen world below us has large influence over what happens in the seen world. As the Moon shows us an equally bright and dark face, we remember that the dark and light are necessary partners, dependent upon each other to generate new life. There isn’t only one way to be. Bring in your light if you are feeling it. Bring in your dark if that’s your truth. In this way, we negotiate the relationship between death and life, reality and dream. Being authentic (a desire supported by the Aquarius Moon for most of the day) is the best way to align with this moment. The irony is that we may be feeling most the depleted just as Scorpio transformation begins to generate renewed power. Just as we reach the bottom, we discover new power. Death does beget life. But it takes a while to get through the eddies of planetary shifts before we truly feel it. Be how you are, things are about to change.

Tomorrow, Venus stations direct in Libra and Mercury stations retrograde in Sagittarius. Retrograding through Scorpio, Venus has led us on a journey through the underworld to reclaim beauty and justice. This journey hasn’t been without its casualties, but we’ve claimed some victories too. Venus will re-enter Scorpio in early December. Frustrated rage may have become depression but there is reason to turn again to action. If this lunar cycle is about using power on behalf of those furthest from power, then Venus emboldens our passions to fight for justice with new wisdom. Mercury’s retrograde in the sign of know-it-all Sagittarius (love ya, Sag!), forces us to admit we don’t. And that is OK. Humor could become the safety valve, helping us stay determined and humble. As a last and worthy tribute to their’ extended stay in Aquarius, Mars makes an encouraging sextile to Uranus in Aries. Perhaps this influence gives us confidence to keep working for change. But we are also tired of the same old exhortations to keep resisting in the same old ways. Things are in flux. Later in the day Mars enters Pisces. Due to retrograde motion during the summer, Mars has outstayed their welcome in this analytical, opinionated sign. Of course, Aquarius isn’t just these things, but when the planet of war spends too much time in a sign, we begin to see its belligerent side. We need another energy. Mars in Pisces will bring relief. It is time to soften a bit. Perhaps we don’t have to hold up that extra shield anymore. Perhaps having a big, sloppy heart is not shameful but valiant and necessary. The Moon in Pisces (tonight through Sunday morning) will help us slip into big heartedness and big feelings.

Moon in Pisces
Friday, November 16.
Venus and Mercury are doing the do-si-do today. Each are pausing to change the direction of their dance step. Venus in Libra will move forward. Mercury in Sagittarius will move back. Venus stationed retrograde in Scorpio on October 5, the day before Kavanaugh was sworn in as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Venus took this journey through rage and grief. Venus’ reason and the gifts we’ve received are revealed as this planet turns around to move back through the same degrees of the zodiac. Venus will reach the retrograde degree on December 16. Until that time, each step back from the underworld is a victory. Each step back is a gathering of power.

The planet we love to blame is daring us to take responsibility for our own assumptions. Mercury stations retrograde in the sign of meaning, truth, and belief. Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, has just entered that sign. We notice our tendency to inflate everything—the disgust around others’ beliefs, the sense that our truth is best, the fear of being trapped in meaningless boredom. Perhaps Mercury is helping us purge unhelpful attitudes. This is a great time to notice our sense of entitlement. Why do we think we deserve efficiency or even dependability? Who said life was fair and why does fair mean that it goes your way? I am not immune to preferencing my point of view. What will a sudden revealing of my assumptions teach me? As always, it pays to acknowledge Mercury’s power. If we agree to meet Mercury halfway, this trickster planet might just decide to go easy on us.

The Moon is in Pisces. The strategy is to go with the flow and to tend to our hearts.

Moon in Pisces
Saturday, November 17.
If you have planets or personal points around 13 degrees of a mutable sign (Pisces, Gemini, Virgo, or Sagittarius) you are feeling the tides strongly right about now. Mercury just stationed retrograde at this degree, Neptune is stationing at this degree, and the Moon conjoins Neptune at this degree today. Even if we don’t have a personal point transited by this energy, it is still influencing all of us. The first thing to know is that we are not in control. These influences are designed to help us surrender. As we let encrusted layers of defense and certainty slip away, what do we find in our hearts? It may be a great deal of grief. Let the tears flow. Make offerings to the hopes that failed you. We are not wrong to have dared for such beauty. Know that we are knitting back the raw wounded edges of loss.

Moon enters Aries 9:56 am CST
Sunday, November 18.
When water and fire mix, we either get a pile of soggy ash or the miracle of alchemy. These two elements are not supposed to go together, but we pull it off when we can dance between the waters of emotion and the fires of inspiration. The Moon enters the cardinal fire sign, Aries, while the Sun, Mars, Neptune, and Chiron tenant water signs. We’ve just had a couple of days of the Moon reflecting back to us our sensitive and tender emotions. Now that the Moon is in fire, we take those feelings into creative action. Early in the day, the Moon trines Jupiter in Sagittarius. This is a good day to discover, to do something you’ve never done before, to be guided by luck and serendipity. Towards the end of the day, when the Moon squares Saturn in Capricorn, we might feel momentary self-judgments around those daring acts. Practice acceptance anyway.

Moon in Aries
November 19—Gibbous Moon: Budding.

The Aries Moon encourages boldness. But it isn’t the only astrological influence that could push us into the next phase of our journeys. We are in the mood to take risks. Sometimes, we need to give into such impulses. Let us feel large feelings. Let us dare to connect through our sorrows and joys. Let us remember we are more than our wounds. We are beauty resurfacing. At this phase of the Moon, we feel as though we are on the cusp of something big. The budding energy of our lunar intentions are ready to burst. The square between Mars in Pisces and Jupiter in Sagittarius adds to this expansiveness. The nature of these planets and these signs tells us that we may as well lean in to the large feelings that would otherwise topple us. There is something our bodies are remembering: how to enlarge our capacity, how to be engulfed, and how to regain equilibrium. This moment could be a turning point.

This lunar cycle is a myth in the making. Venus is the hero/heroine/traveler going so far from us we think they may never return. Venus is the sweetness in life: relationship, beauty, equity, and balance. Their retrograde journey—through Scorpio back into Libra, and then returning through Libra and Scorpio, once more—feels like an archetypal reclamation of power. We’ve been through a lot. Our battle scars become messages written on our skin. We’ve discovered more than we think we have. Perhaps this is one lesson: We are powerful when we live in service to beauty and justice. What are you realizing about power? What is the meaning behind your underworld journey?

Moon enters Taurus 5:43 pm CST
Tuesday, November 20.
One of the dangers of being made aware of the world’s suffering is that we will become numb to it all. Numbness is our bodies telling us we are overwhelmed. It is time to take a break. We may be feeling numb or we could be feeling a lot as the Sun in Scorpio makes a trine aspect to Chiron in Pisces. Even on the edge of overwhelm, a healing balm is offered. Look for your medicine. It isn’t just our hearts that are moved today. Our nervous systems are being agitated by the Moon in Aries connecting to the opposition between Venus in Libra and Uranus in Aries. The Venus/Uranus aspect isn’t exact until November 30, but the Moon gives us a foretaste. If Venus has been dormant during their recent retrograde journey, then this contact is a reawakening. Injustices, especially around gender, are provoking response. This aspect also asks us to wake up in our personal relationships. Seek balance between personal agency and mutual dependencies.

Moon in Taurus
Wednesday, November 21.
The Moon in Taurus brings perspective to the end of the Scorpio season. The Sun will enter Sagittarius tomorrow on the full Moon. We honor the grounding lessons of earth as the season of death comes to conclusion, although importantly, Venus still has their return journey through Scorpio to perform (Venus in Scorpio from December 2 to January 8). More agitation from Uranus in Aries (as the Sun forms a quincunx aspect to Uranus) emphasizes the need for connection to earth. Around us, we see extreme imbalance through climate change. It is hard to believe that the cycle of life, death, and rebirth can be relied upon. Notice evidence today that death begets life. This doesn’t excuse us from our work to reclaim a more sane balance, but it can be reassuring. The Moon connects to Saturn to reinforce commitment. The Moon connects to Neptune to inspire us to serve.
