Follow the Moon: October 2, 2018 - October 7

Moon in Cancer
October 2—Last Quarter Moon: Seed Formation.
This lunar cycle began a mere three weeks ago, but it feels like a longer time. We’ve been on an emotional journey during this cycle, and it isn’t over yet. In fact, it is going to go deeper and get more intense. Transits this week give access to Scorpio’s rage and thirst for exposing the truth. For those living in the U.S., this last week has been a triggering and dreadful reminder that we live in a rape culture. Rage and truth are medicine for this condition. This lunar cycle was seeded by Virgo’s devotion to the sacred in all life. At the new Moon, I set an intention to re-dedicate myself to my purpose. Perhaps, you found yourself recommitting to an essential practice. Virgo’s practice, driven by regard for divine wholeness, is to serve, tend, and heal. Having touched upon this sacred place in our psyches, we are wounded even more, by the violence perpetrated by patriarchy, which is to say, the entrenched oppressive power of white men. Virgo is humble, but it is not a weak power. This seed produces more seeds. The seed formation at this stage of the lunar cycle is the beginning of the next generation of Virgo power. Having experienced all that we’ve experienced so far in this lunar cycle, what passion and power goes into these seeds? How has your dedication changed?

The Moon in Cancer opens us to emotion and a fierce protectiveness. Cancer represents the source of life. It calls us to defend marginalized people. Its power originates in family, home, and hearth. Briefly today, this Cancer moon forms a grand water trine with Neptune in Pisces (feelings of universality) and Venus in Scorpio (feelings of rage). The Moon also forms a challenging t-square pattern with Mercury in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn. Mercury and Pluto are square today. This is where we invoke the medicine of truth telling. Secrets can become toxic. Honesty with self, first, and with power, next, is the healer.

Venus in Scorpio is now stationary, and thus more powerful. Venus will turn retrograde on October 5. Venus will retrace their steps through the first 10 degrees of Scorpio, will return to Libra on October 31, and will station direct on November 16. A retrograde journey is a commitment to reclamation. Venus, the part of us that reveres beauty, connection, and justice, travels through the shadows of power to reclaim something each of us needs right now. As new seeds form, what intention will you claim for this moment? We are more powerful than these decaying systems of oppression. We are also more beautiful and more sacred. That essence of ourselves is there to be remembered. These seeds are wild.

Take some time to regroup. Yesterday’s astrological influences were large. We are processing emotion. Our bodies need rest from near-constant bombardment of information and reactivity. It is ok to exhale. The Moon is void of course in Cancer for the first half of the day (U.S. time zones). Be OK with letting go. Try engaging less with information sources and social media. The Moon enters Leo later. Leo can bring a renewal of energy. It is easy to associate fire with anger, but this fire sign also brings joy. Tend to this fire. What brings you joy? When we rekindle that flame, we are able to spread it to others. The Moon will square Uranus in Taurus right after entering Leo. Let triggering reactivity become curiosity for how we can use the power of joy to transform the world.

Moon in Leo
Thursday, October 4.
The Moon opposes Mars in Aquarius and squares Venus in Scorpio. This aspect pattern, called a t-square, is provocative. We want to balance oppositions but we can’t concede to the other side. Conflicts feel more intense, but also more honest and more productive. Mars is still going through the region of the zodiac that it retraced during the summer’s retrograde. Mars went on a journey to reclaim Aquarian powers. Reclamation sometimes means letting go of what doesn’t serve. What hasn’t been serving recently is stale ideology. We are meant to reinvigorate our activism and vision for the future by rethinking how we think and what we think. Aquarius loves abstraction and can be divorced from emotion and passion. Perhaps Venus and the Moon remind us how to reconnect our ideas to our hearts.

October 5—Balsamic Moon: Composting

I can't run no more
With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
Say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
A thundercloud
And they're going to hear from me.
From Anthem by Leonard Cohen

At the Virgo new Moon, I quoted this same song’s lyrics to remind myself to embrace my imperfections:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

Virgo power includes the power of purification. With this energy, we can get fixated on the small and unimportant details or we can summon up a thundercloud. As we compost the lessons of this lunar cycle, we sense a storm coming. Importantly, significantly, Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio today. The retrograde journey is a reclamation. We need to retrieve something that we’ve lost. We go down and under. We let go and we receive. The gift comes back with us as the planet stations direct and we retrace the steps out of the underworld. What gift is waiting for us as Venus turns to go into Scorpio’s purple dark? Venus will station direct on November 16 in Libra. We are used to thinking of Scorpio as a brooding storm, but Libra’s fury is about justice. Have we forgotten the power of retribution? Have we forgotten we can be the storm that brings it?

Virgo is the perfect guide for discerning how much to unleash and how much to store away. It is the energy we want to invoke when we are letting ourselves become the storm while also remaining firmly anchored in self-care. The sacred purpose that we rededicated ourselves to this lunar cycle is the grace to know the differences.

The Moon returns to Virgo today and forms a wide-orbed grand earth trine with revolutionary Uranus and accountable Saturn. Draw upon the blessings of the Earth, say your prayers, and be the storm.

Virgo is a sign with many magical powers. One of the most powerful is the power of small acts creating big impact. On this weekend day, with the Moon’s light waning into darkness. Embrace the small acts. Perhaps you use this energy to go through your closet and recycle the clothes you no longer want to wear. Perhaps you clear your calendar of distractions so you can focus on your heart’s desire for the coming season. Perhaps you put your garden to bed for the winter ahead. Don’t be fooled into thinking that small acts are a waste of time when the world is falling apart. You are weaving the web back together.

Moon enters Libra 8:10 pm CDT
Sunday, October 7.
A new lunar cycle begins tomorrow. It is time to honor the gifts and lessons of the Virgo cycle that ends today. The last day of a lunar cycle is sacred to the goddess Hekate. This is the day to sweep up the offerings and magical workings of the past lunar cycle and offer them to the one who stands with us at the crossroads. A new Moon is a time of choosing. We choose our magic. We choose our intentions. We choose the world we wish to create. Empty, and let yourself dream. The Sun in Libra makes a paradoxical quincunx to Neptune in Pisces today. The contrast is between concepts of balance, justice and reciprocity and revelations of oneness, forgiveness, and sacrifice. It is not about either/or, but both/and. This mystical state creates the field where we plant our Libra seeds for the next cycle.
