Follow the Moon: October 16, 2018 - October 23

Moon in Capricorn
October 16—First Quarter Moon: Sprouting.
Trauma is a word that feels overused right now. I get that we may be losing an important distinction if we use it to describe every discomfort we feel. And still, I reach for the word when I notice helplessness, numbing, anger, or fear in myself and others. It may seem dramatic to say that current events are re-traumatizing, but it has felt that way for a while. We live in a traumatized world, doing the best we can, which brings me to the astrological context for this lunar cycle. We are traveling in close relationship to our traumas right now. Venus retrograding through Scorpio is a major factor. Sensitivity to trauma increased when Jupiter entered Scorpio a year ago. Venus’ journey at the end of Jupiter’s year in this probing sign of transformation, signals that we are reaching another level of awareness, another layer of denial is peeling away. The effects of trauma are rising to the surface. And that can feel like a lot to deal with. It is a lot to deal with. This is no time to ignore the inner world, yet it can be a time to remember that emotions are not final, we are not our feelings, and we can nurture resilience in ourselves and others. Healing is possible. It may the most important work we can do at this moment.

At the new Moon, I imagined myself as Inanna’s faithful companion, Ninshubar, mourning the loss of beauty and justice. The evening star is gone. How can we be guided back to healing? The first quarter phase is the time to act, to face our challenges, to make an attempt to change our circumstances on behalf of our lunar intentions. Ninshubar did not give up on getting Inanna back from the underworld. Will we dare the same thing in the face of our traumas? I want to be clear. Our wounds may not disappear. Our trauma responses may remain. It isn’t about getting better, as if being traumatized is a flaw of some sort. But I think it may be about not giving up. My guiding questions for this phase are: What reconnects me to beauty and justice? How will I act to reclaim those qualities?

Mercury in Scorpio is the star of this week. Only the Moon contacts Venus, but Mercury contacts Neptune and Mars to seek ways to learn, communicate, and reconnect from this place of depth. Today’s Moon in Capricorn (conjoining Pluto and getting help from Jupiter) invokes realism as the best method to move forward into action. The journey into the dark is fruitful. It plays a role in our survival. It plays a role in our reconnecting.

Moon enters Aquarius 2:36 am CDT
Wednesday, October 17.
An Aquarius Moon brings detachment and helps us reframe emotional experiences. What can we learn? How can we use this influence to design better responses? Not everything can be fixed with a new attitude, but new attitudes can help build resiliency. Contrast the abstract and airy qualities of Aquarius thought patterns with the torrents of emotion that Venus in Scorpio has been stirring up. Can we blend these responses? Can we value all paths to wholeness?

Moon in Aquarius
Thursday, October 18.
The Moon in Aquarius conjoins Mars and forms a square to Mercury in Aquarius. Tomorrow, the square between Mars and Mercury perfects. Today, we notice this influence as tempers are roused and passions are inflamed. Yesterday’s astrological influences helped us see detachment and engagement in new ways. Scorpio influences push us deeper to reveal, at least to ourselves, the ways we’ve been traumatized. Aquarian influences react by creating distance in order to process and conceptualize what is going on deep within. This isn’t always an avoidance technique. It can also give us the perspective to cope with overwhelming emotion. Let’s give ourselves and others a break. Thinking well of others, we learn that everyone handles the overwhelm in different ways. Perhaps through the interdependencies of relationship, we also learn that this needs to happen in just this way.

Moon enters Pisces 3:20 pm CDT
Friday, October 19.
This summer, Mars made a retrograde journey through the first degrees of Aquarius into the last degrees of Capricorn. Then Mars stationed direct and has now finally moved into the later degrees of Aquarius for the first time. Mars is about moving forward. Mars retrogrades challenge the ways we habitually engage our wills. This process can feel awkward. It can be frustrating. Now that Mars is out of the retrograde shadow, change, action, and reaction will happen more quickly. We may notice this difference with the square occurring between Mercury in Scorpio and Mars in Aquarius. Not everyone agrees with each other. That can be refreshing. Might be provocative. Should be energizing. Be aware that after the Moon moves into Pisces, distinctions and emotions may blur, challenging our notions of clarity. While Mercury is forming a trine to Neptune in Pisces, intuition plays a role in action, conflict, and decision making. The soulful journey we take this lunar cycle asks us to trust the process, however confusing, however triggering. There’s a reason we surrender control.

Moon in Pisces
October 20—Gibbous Moon: Budding.
This is the season of thinning veils. Witches are aware that the connection between the worlds of the living and the dead strengthens when the Sun moves into Scorpio. The veils that ordinarily separate these worlds becomes thinner. We are able to honor and listen to our ancestors. We are able to send our prayers of healing through all realms. These prayers reweave the web of connection. This web feeds life. The sign of Scorpio carries this awareness all the time, regardless of season. Scorpio knows that other worlds, deeper worlds, exist and that reconnection to these worlds creates wholeness. It serves life. It serves death, too.

The Sun enters Scorpio on October 23, but already we’ve been immersed in Scorpio influence. This influence includes Jupiter in Scorpio since October 2017, Mercury in Scorpio, and Venus retrograding through Scorpio. The Moon in Pisces draws out this influence. The water sign to water sign connection helps us move deeper as we let go. This phase of the Moon encourages action. We are still building upon the lunar intentions set at the new Moon in Libra on October 8. Our next actions in service to this magic are influenced by and draw power from water. Water helps us connect the worlds. Water helps us to soften and listen to those on the other side of the veil. From now until astronomical Samhain on November 7 (when the Sun reaches the midpoint of Scorpio), the passageways between the worlds are open. Perhaps they remain open even beyond that time this year, due to Venus’ extended journey through Scorpio. After retrograding back into Libra from October 31 to December 2, Venus does not leave Scorpio until January 7, 2019. Retrograde journeys are about recovery. Let water be a resource and an offering to the sacred relationship between the worlds. May the recovery of beauty and justice during this lunar cycle be a reminder to protect and honor water.

Moon in Pisces
Sunday, October 21.
The Moon journey through Pisces continues. Pisces is the sign of completion in astrology. The next sign, Aries, represents a new cycle of development. Notice contrasting influences today. The Moon is waxing, which means we are still very much engaged with building upon the Libra seeds of this lunar cycle. However, the Moon in Pisces encourages letting go of outcome and process. This contrast could feel like despair. Perhaps it feels confusing. Perhaps we notice deeper currents rising to the surface, buried issues that need to be addressed before the full Moon on October 24. Regardless of what it is you exactly feel, be willing to surf the waves of contrasting emotion. And if you are comfortable with that, be willing to help someone else navigate paradoxical currents.

Moon enters Aries 1:58 am CDT
Monday, October 22.
Energy shifts again. It always does. The Moon in Aries reminds us to claim more agency. The beginning of this Libra lunar cycle felt like it was seeded by the loss of justice and beauty. The Scorpio pull towards the dark depths has been strong. On the last day of the Sun in Libra, we get back in touch with the will to act. Empowering us to turn collective pain into power, Mercury in Scorpio forms a sextile aspect to Pluto in Capricorn. Note what you have been learning recently. This influence helps us express ideas and passion. The Sun in the final degree of Libra makes a quincunx aspect to Chiron in the final degree of Pisces. Heart journeys become soulful journeys to reclaim something lost.

Moon in Aries
Tuesday, October 23. Sun enters Scorpio.
Sparks of rage may light new fires as the Sun entering Scorpio opposes Uranus in Taurus. This opposition forms a grand fixed cross with the nodes of the Moon spanning the early degrees of Leo and Aquarius. Feel your own fierce desires to change your life and our world. These fixed signs deliver elemental messages to incite us to take the next major step along our life path. Listen to earth’s plea for change. Listen to water’s messages of soul. Listen to air’s reminders to open our minds. Listen to fire’s desire to transform and renew. This energy is feeding tomorrow’s full Moon. Events could be disruptive, but necessary anyway, to break apart feelings of despair and hopelessness. The journey of grief takes many turns. We witness a new one today.
