Follow the Moon: Full Moon October 24, 2018

Moon enters Taurus 9:33 am CDT
October 24—Full Moon: Blossoming

“Hope is not a lottery ticket you can sit on the sofa and clutch, feeling lucky. It is an axe you break down doors with in an emergency. Hope should shove you out the door, because it will take everything you have to steer the future away from endless war, from the annihilation of the earth's treasures and the grinding down of the poor and marginal... To hope is to give yourself to the future - and that commitment to the future is what makes the present inhabitable.”
― Rebecca Solnit, Hope in the Dark

The journey of grief takes many turns. In the Sumerian story of Inanna’s journey into death, the powerful goddess of Heaven surrendered a piece of her life force and power at each of seven gates leading into the underworld. Each gate a turning point. Each turning point a crossroad of choice. Many think we may be living in one of the most stressful times in human history. I really don’t know if this is true, but I do know that choice brings stress. Choices with high stakes bring even more stress. There is no denying the stakes are incredibly high right now as we face decisions that will impact our futures. We are journeying through the gates of surrender and choice. This is not a simple journey.

The new Moon on October 8 was a beginning. Just a few days before the new Moon, Venus stationed retrograde in Scorpio. This retrograde is a primary influence on the lunar cycle, seeded in Libra’s desire for beauty and justice. The Venus influence brings a sense that the scales have tipped. Alignment and balance have been lost. As we descend into the underworld, it feels like we are surrendering certainty, innocence, and temperance. It seems dark indeed.

There are stages in this journey, times to note a beginning, a turn, a gate, a choice. Throughout this lunar cycle, these turning points are moments to learn something new, make new commitments, choose new actions. The full Moon in Scorpio is one such moment. Full Moons bring illumination. We are in dark times, but thank goodness for Rebecca Solnit, a brilliant writer who dares to hope. She writes that the dark is no place to give up. It is a place to envision our next bold choices. Transformation happens when we are pushed to a wall.

The full Moon is marked by rebellious Uranus in Taurus conjoining the Moon and opposing the Sun in Scorpio. Snarls escape from our throats (ruled by Taurus by the way). Power comes from surrendering power to this underworld journey. Uranus is the planet of awakening and something powerful is waking up. Maybe this transit represents the “axe of hope” Solnit writes about. We feel urgency. The opposition of Moon/Uranus and the Sun makes a square to the nodes of the Moon. The north node is at 1 Leo. The south is opposite at 1 Aquarius. Astrologers have observed that when the Moon squares the nodal axis, we can experience turning points. This is a crisis and an opportunity to shift the path our lives have been taking. Leo is the growing edge. Creative fire is reenergized by facing current challenges. We are less interested in a conceptualization of change. We are more interested in direct experience of change. What is the spark that ignites hope now? How do we feed that spark?

Venus is moving towards the Sun. The heart of this retrograde journey occurs when the Sun and Venus conjoin on October 26. At this gate, Venus offers another turning point. There is more to uncover and reclaim. Remembering that Venus and the Sun are in Scorpio I wonder, Is power the route back to beauty and justice? Does ruthless honesty restore the balance? Do we continue to shed extraneous layers and righteously grieve our losses? This journey is fierce, and it is not over. On October 31, traditional Samhain when the veils between the worlds thin, Venus opposes Uranus for the second time.   (September 12 was the first.) Venus rules the betrayed sense of beauty and justice raging in our hearts. Venus speaks for the genders marginalized by oppression. Venus moves back into Libra on October 31. Halloween is another turning point, a time to reclaim, recover our voices. Venus gateways conclude after the end of this lunar cycle. On November 16, Venus stations direct in Libra. November 30, for the final time, Venus in the last degree of Libra opposes Uranus in Aries. This gateway is a chance to integrate polarities around individuation and relationship. If we wake up fully ourselves, will we claim better relationships? If we wake up to our relationships, do we better understand how personal choices impact our futures?

I don’t believe in the kind of hope that requires us to remain blissfully ignorant of the dark times around us. The influence of Uranus at this full Moon asks us to have a different kind of hope, one based in action and change. Venus takes the ultimate journey into death to remind us how strong we are. This is a different kind of power. Even though we are at a crucial place of choice, our ancestors have been here before. They have wisdom to share. As the veils continue to thin between our worlds, we realize we are not alone at these crossroads. Never alone. Let us take up our axes. Let us fly out that door.
