Follow the Moon: September 9, 2018 Virgo New Moon

Moon in Virgo
September 9, 2018—New Moon: Seeding.

Dedication is the act of “giving oneself to some purpose.” Dedication reconnects us. It restores the world. It is the antidote for depletion, fragmentation, and despair. Dedication is Virgo’s magic. Devotion, taking that dedication into serving our purpose, is dedication’s companion. Dedication and devotion are all encompassing. No wonder the archetype of the Virgin gets assigned to this energy. The virgin represents the purity of entirely knowing one’s purpose and devotion. There are many things virginity doesn’t mean. Those ideas have been assigned through a culture of sex negativity and oppression of women. That is not the kind of virgin I mean.

What if we released the cultural story of virginity—instead honoring the expression of desire, which is so intimately connected to purpose and devotion—and claimed the virginal power of restoring wholeness through wholehearted devotion? How radical would that be? How cool to restore interconnection through reclaiming the power of this kind of virginity. My desire, my purpose, and my devotion are needed by a world that is breaking up into fragments of pain and isolation. Your desire, purpose and devotion are needed, too.

This new Moon in Virgo represents a sacred moment of rededication. Old stories tell us that virginity is renewable. We aren’t virgins only once. Every time we reconnect with the all-encompassing power of our purpose, we become virginal, potent, healers. Will you embrace this possibility at the Virgo new Moon dedication time?

Here are good things to do in the Virgo season to rekindle power.
·       Cultivate appreciation for small things.
·       Find simple ways to bring more beauty, balance, and wellness into your life.
·       Savor those moments when you sense more beauty, balance, and wellness in your life.
·       Honor your guides and allies. Who inspires your devotion?
·       Hone the skill of discernment. Is the thing more practical, elegant, ingenious, useful? Honor it.
·       Rededicate yourself to your guiding purpose, to your own wellbeing, to serving collective interconnections.

Every power invokes a shadow. Virgo’s shadow, perfectionism, is oppression’s way of making sure we are disempowered. This lunar cycle offers an opportunity to dismantle these messages that keep us from the healing power of Virgo’s dedication. It isn’t about doing it perfectly. Indeed, the power of imperfection is vast and transformative. I love this song by Leonard Cohen for that message:

You can add up the parts
You won't have the sum
You can strike up the march
There is no drum
Every heart, every heart to love will come
But like a refugee

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

Virgoan and other shadows may be explored more fully as Venus leaves Libra for Scorpio’s domain on the same day as the new Moon. Venus appearing in the same sign as Jupiter opens the gates of deeper searching and healing. These two planets add beauty and power to the evening sky for the next two to three weeks until they begin sinking into the rays of the setting Sun. Transitions are happening. Venus will station retrograde in Scorpio on October 5. Jupiter will leave Scorpio on November 8. The sight of these two glorious planets in the early evening sky allows us to recognize and honor the ways we have witnessed and transformed our deeper selves since Jupiter entered Scorpio in October 2017. Do these transformations play a role in your dedications this lunation?

Venus instigates more than shadow work this cycle. This planet of pleasure, love, and justice is also an instigator of change. Venus, Mars, and Uranus have been gearing up to provoke rebellion. Elements of the status quo are unacceptable under this t-square influence. We may become more aware of injustices towards marginalized people. We are looking for different tactics to right wrongs, and patience is at a minimum. The frustrations of this aspect pattern set the tone for Venus’ retrograde journey that begins in Scorpio at the end of this lunar cycle. Relationships could be strained by a strong desire for justice. The goal of this particular journey may be to stay in relationship while feeling passionate about differing values. Abandoning people we disagree with will not help us change the world. Avoiding conflict won’t either. Doing conflict well is a skill we may need to hone. Will this be part of your purpose for this cycle?

The Sun and Moon conjoin in Virgo opposite Neptune in Pisces. This influence stretches the potency inherent in this new Moon between two poles of spirit and meaning. Both Pisces and Virgo are mutable signs. Mutable signs are the antennas of the zodiac perceiving and broadcasting information. Pisces uses the power of water. Virgo uses earth. This opposition could feel like striving to solidify the ineffable. Perhaps it is impossible. Perhaps that is what will happen for you. Opposing planets can either reach for each other or create even more distance. If we bring earth to water, we may ground our hearts and soften our hard places. This is a gift for our devotions and our dedications if we surrender control to become whole, virginal, once more.
