Follow the Moon: August 18, 2018 - August 25

Moon enters Sagittarius 11:45 am CDT
August 18—First Quarter Moon: Sprouting.
We are nearing the end of the Sun-ruled season of Leo. Astrology’s symbol for the Sun is a circle. In the center of the circle is the self. The self, centered in the Sun, is noble, dignified, royal. Leo the Lion is a king. In Leo season, this concept of personal sovereignty teaches us important lessons about being human. My short perusal of the dictionary tells me that nobility means having dignity and dignity means having worth. So much of Leo’s journey is about self-worth, and so we get back to the Sun—the life-giving, illuminating energy that says, you have worth, you are valued, know this. Apollo, a Sun god of Greece, has written on his temple in Delphi, Know Thyself. Perhaps the only way to follow Apollo’s command is to learn to value ourselves, not asking anyone else to affirm our essential dignity, but to claim it for ourselves. This isn’t easy. Personal sovereignty is dangerous. Systems of oppression don’t want us to have it. We are bombarded in so many ways with messages that we are not worthy. I think a little bit of the Sun goes out when we can’t access our own dignity. And a little bit of solar power comes back when we do.

This lunar cycle was seeded in Leo. For my lunar intention, I chose to cultivate self-kindness. At this phase of the Moon, we are often asked to try something new. I step into this ask with the practice of centering myself in dignity while I fill myself with kindness. This creates solar generosity. This expansive energy is supported by the Moon in expansive Sagittarius. Sagittarius is prone to travel, stepping off into adventure. What new step will you take today? Imagine the Sun infusing that step with your inherent dignity.

Big news. Mercury in Leo stations direct today. This planet turned retrograde on July 25. Since that time, perhaps you’ve notice how hard it can be to communicate with dignity. What changes in perceiving may have shown you another way to open to your own worthiness? Have you learned anything (usually the hard way) about generosity in thought and word? These are Leo-inspired questions to guide you through this turnaround of mercurial influence. Mercury is aided in beauty and grace today through a sextile aspect with Venus in Libra. I’ve got a post it next to my desk that says: “Keep the words on your tongue, tender and life-giving.” Yes, that.

The final trine between Jupiter in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces perfects today. By final, I mean the last time for now. These two planets will be in this relationship again, but not for a while. The influence of this trine is an important component to Jupiter’s transit through Scorpio, which began in October 2017 and concludes in November 2018. While Jupiter in this sign has been encouraging digging deeper, exposing harms, purging toxicity, and healing wounds, we’ve had the softening influence of Neptune encouraging a willingness to let it go. That doesn’t mean all has gone perfectly and we are done with this depth work. But it might mean we’ve developed more resiliency to be in this healing work as we go forward. The source of resiliency from this Neptune influence might come from self-compassion, empathy for others, releasing our grief, finding our people, or sourcing spirit as we do deep transformation healing. The Moon in Sagittarius adds to the expansive nature of the day. Perhaps we need to go past old boundaries today. See what is on the other side.

Moon enters Capricorn 11:00 pm
Monday, August 20.
It might be hard to concentrate on work today. Yesterday’s heart-expansive trine between Jupiter in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces is still very influential. The Moon in Sagittarius for most of the day plays the wanderlust song. Those of you already on vacation will appreciate your wise choice. Those of us who are not, how can we metaphorically travel to another land today? Find your own adventure, cross into foreign lands. What is the truth to be found?

Moon in Capricorn
Tuesday, August 21.
Thanks to the Moon in Capricorn, expansive emotion from the last few days has a place to land and ground. Some of us might notice a pushback from risking vulnerability during that time. Or maybe you just need to integrate. Let’s not judge ourselves too harshly and instead find more concrete action based on what we learned. The Sun in Leo makes a puzzling quincunx aspect to Mars in Capricorn. Mars happens to be stationary right now and this influence could bring enlightenment to the entire retrograde journey Mars began in Aquarius on June 26. Have we learned better strategies, better ways to express visionary ideals, or did we get mired in ideology? All of it is information. We gather will and impulse, passion and action into an energetic ball to be released on August 27, when Mars stations direct. Where will you direct your passion next? What new resolve is being formed? What lessons will you take back with you?

Moon in Capricorn
August 22—Gibbous Moon: Budding. Sun enters Virgo.
We can always do it better, right? The impulse to improve and perfect is overwhelming and feels in opposition to cultivating kindness towards ourselves. But if kindness leads the way, can we see growth as natural? Improvement as integrity? How does kindness sweeten the desire to do better? This phase of the Moon pushes that part of ourselves that wants to do better. Intention planted at the new Moon is on the cusp of blossoming. What more can we do in to insure we are successful? That’s what this phase is about. The Sun moving into Virgo today only intensifies this sense that it would be good to bring more cohesion into our lives. How do we take the parts of our experience and make something new, something beautiful and of service? The quincunx aspect between Venus in Libra and Neptune in Pisces provides another layer of contrast between perfection and reality. Sometimes our ideals are too lofty. Perhaps you need to make a course correction to bring your dream into the here and now. Such realism can be beautiful. The Moon in Capricorn approves.

Moon enters Aquarius 11:55 am CDT
Thursday, August 23.
The day feels strategic. The influence of the Sun in Virgo and the Moon in Aquarius encourages both pragmatism as well as abstract thinking. We can harness this energy to problem solve and map out our next steps. The Virgo influence can also encourage selfless acts of devotion mixed with Aquarian vision. We desire change. Mutable signs, like Virgo, occur before the next change of season. They prepare us for change. This earthy mutable sign encourages organization and a recommitment to the work. These help us with the uncertainties ahead.

Moon in Aquarius
Friday, August 24.
Communication might get bogged down by core issues. As we seek to understand each other and express what is really important to us, some will favor pure logic due to the Aquarius Moon influence. Some might favor intense emotional sharing due to the Jupiter in Scorpio influence, and some might favor connections that feed their sense of worthiness under the Mercury in Leo influence. It helps to be curious about the motivations behind communication. The quincunx aspect between the Sun in Virgo and Chiron in Aries adds more stress to misunderstandings and setbacks. Don’t gloss over wounds or disregard their influence on our true needs.

Moon in Aquarius
Saturday, August 25.
A solar grand trine in earth signs graces this day. These are special configurations of planets at their powerful stationary points in harmonious aspect to the Sun. This grand trine is comprised of the Sun in Virgo, Saturn in Capricorn, and Uranus in Taurus. Both Saturn and Uranus recently changed directions.  The Sun activates Saturn/Uranus potential for grounded change. We could hear important economic or political news today. We could use this energy to manifest the changes we desire. If you are currently experiencing a stressful Saturn or Uranus transit, things get better for a while. We are ready for change and ready for the commitment it requires. This influence leads into the full Moon tomorrow when lunar intention blossoms. Before that happens, reflect on the ways you may refine or strengthen your intention. The Aquarius Moon is pretty dispassionate. What role does objectivity play in your self-awareness?
