Following the Moon: New Moon May 15, 2018

 Moon enters Gemini 3:43 pm
May 15—New Moon: Seeding.
The Earth is speaking to us, always. The messages are coming stronger now. This New Moon in fixed earth sign Taurus turns up the volume. The ingress of Uranus into Taurus today turns up the volume. The square between Mars and Uranus turns up the volume. Jupiter in Scorpio opposing the Sun and Moon in Taurus, turns up the volume. The Earth is speaking and we are called to remember our connections to the Earth. I believe this connection helps us learn how to be better people. Connection helps us remember impact and obligation, integrity and accountability. Connection also brings the good things that help us stay in flow and right size: delight, gratitude, humility, wonderment, creativity—these are some. Disconnected, we are missing out on why life is a blessing. The Earth is speaking and I invite you to listen deeply during this lunar cycle.

At this New Moon, I am imagining the power of mycelium. This is the underground web of connection that births mushrooms. Mushrooms are powerful transformers. They provide healing medicine for animal and Earth. Importantly, they transform toxins into beneficial resources. They do it naturally. The mushroom is the fruiting body of the mycelium, the underground web of connection that can stretch for miles. Can we become like mycelium, connected, subversive transformers? Can we be a benefit to life?

The ingress of Uranus into Taurus (along with the square from Mars) makes this inquiry vital. Right now, genocide is happening in Gaza. White people are calling police to report people being Black. The U.S. government is quickly dismantling protections for the Earth, for transgender people, for immigrants, for all of us since we are connected. Relative privilege keeps us from realizing how we are impacted by these oppressions and threats. Uranus is the awakener. The square from Mars is the lightning bolt. I recently learned that scientists have observed that electrical charge (like lightning) can increase the growth of mushrooms. Is it time to awaken and emerge? Great need creates greater subversive webs. The mycelia are busy.

I am grateful for Taurus influence in this moment of awakening. Taurus reminds us that we are bodies, that pleasure is a purpose, that speed does not improve things. I am curious about this last quality. Speed is not an improvement when growing crises stimulate adrenal responses that tell me I should act quickly. We are in danger now. I must act now. Taurus reminds me that I am still learning my body’s wisdoms, and there are other ones beside the adrenal. I am still remembering my connections to Earth. I can’t be fast, but I can commit to opening and deeper listening. I like to imagine a silent forest where the mycelia are quietly growing at the speed of trust. (Thank you Adrienne Maree Brown.) Our connections must be fed slowly but relentlessly, which is another Taurean quality to add to this spell—relentless support.

Jupiter in Scorpio provides an important influence to our Taurus inquiry and the magic of the mushroom. Taurus focuses on life. Scorpio focuses on death. These are intimately dependent on one another. Mushrooms are feeding on death. They make new soil for new life. They are life feeding on death and the power of death to transform. Jupiter here adds power that is often pushed away. Every act of seeing into personal and collective shadow reclaims the power of transformation. Can we let the magic of the mushroom remind us this is good work?

Astrologers commonly divide a lunar cycle into 8 phases. I have been writing my forecasts organized around the lunar cycle and this 8-part division since 2012. Each lunar cycle is an opportunity to follow an intention or manifest a spell through a complete cycle of birth, life, and death. Rebirth follows death. This continuous cycle is not only a template for magic—following intention through the life cycle—it is also a template for living life. At this New Moon Taurus seeds are planted. We can listen to learn more about these seeds and we can infuse these seeds with intention, prayer, and commitment to action. I will be sitting with the mycelium. I ask that a greater sense of connection and empowerment for transformation come from this cycle. I commit to acting on behalf of that vision. What will you do this lunar cycle?

Mushrooms by Sylvia Plath

Overnight, very
Whitely, discreetly,
Very quietly

Our toes, our noses
Take hold on the loam,
Acquire the air.

Nobody sees us,
Stops us, betrays us;
The small grains make room.

Soft fists insist on
Heaving the needles,
The leafy bedding,

Even the paving.
Our hammers, our rams,
Earless and eyeless,

Perfectly voiceless,
Widen the crannies,
Shoulder through holes. We

Diet on water,
On crumbs of shadow,
Bland-mannered, asking

Little or nothing.
So many of us!
So many of us!

We are shelves, we are
Tables, we are meek,
We are edible,

Nudgers and shovers
In spite of ourselves.
Our kind multiplies:

We shall by morning
Inherit the earth.
Our foot's in the door.
