Follow the Moon: Forecast for April 29, 2018 - May 6

Moon enters Scorpio 2:11 am CDT
April 29—Full Moon: Blossoming.
The Full Moon is a blossom. Seeds that were planted in the fertile darkness of the New Moon are flowering halfway through the lunar cycle. This is blossom time, the flowering of the lunar cycle’s potential. As petals unfold we see into the center of the bloom, which becomes a mirror through which we see ourselves. Full Moons bring illumination. At this time, the Moon receives all the light the Sun can give. Reflections create revelations.

Every Full Moon is a blossom. This one even more so for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere. The season of Taurus represents Spring’s rebirth. The sign opposite Taurus, where the Moon resides today, is Scorpio and it reminds us that death is intimately connected to life. At this Full Moon, we feel the potency of this dynamic exchange between emergence and submergence. There is power here. And Mystery.

This cycle began in Aries. Aries seeds of emergence and identity were planted. As the blossom of this cycle unfurls, what do you see reflected back to you about these things? Who is emerging? What in you is being born? Though this new life may feel tender and perhaps unsure of itself, we tap into raw power through the Scorpio Moon. Death makes life potent. Life makes death meaningful. Scorpio influences say, don’t turn away from power or death. Don’t turn away from truth. Jupiter in Scorpio since October 2017, is boosting this signal. It is time to claim power and shadow. The recent conjoining of Mars and Pluto in Capricorn (both rulers of Scorpio) lends enormous power to transformation, revelation, and retribution. We want to even the score. Both Taurus and Scorpio relate to money. These signs affirm that wealth, like life, needs to flow between self and others, between manifestation and decomposition. These signs help us attach and detach to find the flow of power that supports our lives.

Sex energy is high at this time. The Scorpio Full Moon can be irresistible. Mars in Capricorn, still conjoining Pluto, says power itself is sexy. Integrity is attractive. To contrast Mars’ passion for solid commitment, we notice a desire to converse, learn, and flit from one connection to another through the influence of Venus in Gemini. Contradictions fuel insights. These insights impact the ways we create and engage with life. What brings more life force to you? Reflect on your own contradictions. Fertile possibilities can be revealed.

The Sun in Taurus makes a firm connection to Saturn in Capricorn. The sex energy of this season recharges our batteries to help us with focus and effectiveness. Saturn supports Earth/body wisdom. Tap into the strength of the Earth and honor the flow of energy centered on life – sex – death to bring healing and determination.

Moon in Scorpio
Monday, April 30.
As the Moon conjoins Jupiter in Scorpio today, expect intensity and deeply embedded emotions to rise to the surface. Post Full Moon energy fosters release and purging. We want to get rid of emotional baggage. This could include people who are emotionally harming to us. This decisive and transformational Moon gets support from Mars and Pluto in Capricorn too. The release, if it comes for you, might not be easy but could bring renewal and even rebirth.

Moon enters Sagittarius 10:19 am CDT
Tuesday, May 1.
Traditional Beltane. The last couple of days have energized Beltane themes. This is the Pagan cross-quarter holy day devoted to fertility and life’s renewal. Sex energy draws us into life. Sex energy is simply life force. It is the sap running through trees, bees diving into flowers, the ripeness of life inviting us to taste its delights. While the Moon was in Scorpio, the nearness of death made us realize how precious this life force is. Now, with the Moon in Sagittarius we may feel the freedom of accepting the ways life and death are intimately connected. None of us know how much life we have left. This is a good day to embrace the life you have in this moment. Not everything is easy. Venus in Gemini is making a puzzling connection to Saturn in Capricorn. The relationship between these two signs can feel contradictory. Gemini is airy and changeable. Capricorn is solid and dependable. Too much of either could be a problem. The right mix is a delightful sensitivity for when to be light-hearted and when to be serious. The realm of relationship gives us insights into this paradox.

Moon in Sagittarius
Wednesday, May 2.
Where are you aiming? And I don’t mean a weapon, per se. The arrow pointed by the sign of the archer could be used as a weapon, but what the archer is really doing is refining their focus. The Sagittarius Moon invites us to look ahead and dream a little. Where might we go next? What does your soul tell you about the search? A square between the Moon and Neptune in Pisces asks us to turn our gaze inward as well as outward. What tools help you split your focus to understand that as within, so without, as without, so within? We are not separate from the rest of life, including the rest of our own parts. Mutable signs, like Sagittarius, offer moments of integration. Be receptive to these moments today.

Moon enters Capricorn 9:06 pm CDT
May 3—Disseminating Moon: Fruiting.
With the Moon in Sagittarius for most of the day (Central Time Zone), the search for meaning gives us fruits to share with the world. This sign and phase of the Moon are a perfect pair. Sagittarian spirit loves to explore and share what they have found with others. The act of sharing and teaching brings the sought-for truth into existence. Truth goes from being a concept to a reality. What have you discovered? What will you share to bring that discovery to life? Without a lot of exact aspects today, we get to explore and exist in this field of discovery. Here is a Sagittarian secret, you do not have to be an expert to be a teacher. In fact, we are always teaching each other as we seek to find the truth that unites. Sometimes we have to take such Sagittarian truth with a grain of salt, but sometimes a jewel is revealed. We get nowhere unless we take a step onto the path. That is freedom.

Moon in Capricorn
Friday, May 4.
We’ve been gathering up messages and truths for this lunar cycle. Today we want to apply them to the world. What will you build from your experiences of this lunar cycle, which began on April 15 in Aries? Not all is harmonious. The Capricorn Moon is a taskmaster. We may notice the contrast between Aries will and Capricorn expectations as a battle for control within ourselves or in our environments. Part of us may want freedom of expression without rules and regulations, while another part wants to cut away excesses to realistically commit to the work of manifestation. As the lunar cycle wanes, we get in touch with realities of maturation. The Moon conjoins Saturn in Capricorn tipping the scale towards acceptance of our mortality. Sober reality can be a relief, however. When we accept boundaries, we function at our best.

Moon in Capricorn
Saturday, May 5.
Astronomical Beltane. The Sun reaches the midpoint of Taurus today. Some of us name this moment when the Sun reaches the center of a fixed sign as the astronomical cross-quarter Sabbath. It is a potent degree in astrological understanding. Fixed signs are anchors. The midpoint is the anchor of the anchor. Considering that Taurus is the fixed earth sign, we are truly anchoring into the elemental powers of earth today. Imagine this is the Ace card in a Tarot deck for the suit of Pentacles. The Moon in cardinal earth Capricorn supports the power of earth as well. Today, we notice our bodies and the ground under us, the earth cycles—compost and germination—the pulse of life itself as our inspiration. Celebrate and give thanks.

Mercury in Aries makes a paradoxical connection to Jupiter in Scorpio. There may be a test of wills centered around communication styles. Perhaps there is a pushback on the authentic vocalization of our truths. Perhaps we need to muster more courage. Perhaps more empathy. If it were a simple problem, then we wouldn’t notice it or learn from it. A lot of learning can happen today. Don’t back away from your power or your responsibility.

Moon enters Aquarius 9:48 am CDT
Sunday, May 6.
The Sun in Taurus receives blessings from the ocean god, Neptune in Pisces through a sextile aspect. This is an opportunity to feel both embodied and transcendent. It can be hard to achieve just the right balance between these states of being. If you tend to lean to one side or the other, only pragmatic or only empathic, then invite a re-centering. Healing is possible from this place. The Moon, while still in Capricorn, briefly activates Uranus in Aries this morning (U.S. time zones). Uranus is in the final degree of Aries on the cusp of entering Taurus on May 15. The revolutionary planet of awakening is passing off Aries fiery passion to Taurean earthiness. Collectively, the Earth will be recognized as our guide and reason for change in the coming years. We’ve known this for a while. The need to change our relationship to the Earth will become even more vital to our survival. When the Moon moves into Aquarius, we leap to embrace new and radical approaches.

Follow the Moon: Forecast for April 22, 2018 - April 28

Moon enters Leo 12:09 pm CDT
April 22—First Quarter Moon: Sprouting.
To be human is to become visible
while carrying what is hidden as a gift to others.
From “What to Remember When Waking” by David Whyte.

We are becoming seeable. The hidden parts of ourselves that have been waiting in the wings now enter the stage. This is the season of emergence. The New Moon that was seeded in Aries has grown in visibility. This lunar cycle takes on momentum. We emerge at the first quarter phase like a small plant unfurling its leaves into uncertainty. This is Aries, both bold and terrified. Are you noticing this in yourself?

Uranus in the late degrees of Aries has been pushing us to go past our edges of security. We’ve been eager to discover new pieces of identity. One minute this feels exciting and the next ungrounded and scary. Spring exposes us. Prepares us for growing. Today, Pluto in Capricorn stations retrograde. We may feel doubly exposed under this influence. Pluto’s domain is the underworld—where things are normally hidden below ground. This powerful moment in Pluto’s journey reminds us that to transform, we need to see and be seen. Secrets feel like burdens. What can you let go of? Notice, if you choose to shed excess burdens, what is revealed about your identity? Who are you really? Pluto’s realm is the realest of all. When we dare to examine our realest parts, we become more vital, ready to grow.

The Moon in Leo takes this vulnerability and runs with it right back to the stage. We might notice the attraction of being seen and the fear of being too exposed. Find the sweet spot for you. Most likely this sweet spot between challenge and comfort will not remain static. We are learning to be nimble. We are learning to shed burdens, perhaps noticing we can fly.

Moon in Leo
Monday, April 23.
Psst, don’t tell anyone. The transits today aren’t earth shattering. I recently shared with a friend that there is nothing sadder than a sad Leo. I mean by that, all of us non-Leos are really rooting for you Leo types to shine and entertain us. If you are up for it today (whether you are a Leo or not) take to the spotlight. Be the spotlight. Shine forth. We all need the extra vitamin D deliciousness of pure unadulterated joy today. Let the light feed your roots, stems, and leaves. We are growing.

Moon enters Virgo 3:40 pm CDT
Tuesday, April 24.
Say goodbye to Venus in Taurus. (Venus entered this sign March 30). It was great while it lasted. Venus rules Taurus. This planet of sensuous pleasures thrives in this realm of fixed earth. That doesn’t mean Venus won’t provide pleasure in Gemini, a mutable air sign. It will just be a different sort of pleasure. Gemini pleasure centers around learning and connecting. Curiosity is sexy. We love sharing what we are learning—the newer the insight, the better. Add to this sparkly energy a great connection between Mars in Capricorn and Jupiter in Scorpio. Perhaps we feel safer sharing more intimate details. Perhaps we have enough detachment that we feel more confident, in spite of the hard things we’ve been going through lately. Let this confidence carry you into your work, your service, your desire to be of help. Virgo energy doesn’t always have to focus on the imperfections around us. There is much to inspire us to stay connected and engaged with life. Notice the small ways you can make the world a better place.

Moon in Virgo
Wednesday, April 25.
Remember the most recent Mercury retrograde period? Maybe not? It happened while Spring’s riot decided to retreat back into Winter’s gloom for just a bit longer. I realize not every place on Earth experienced blizzards this April like where I live, but energetically you may have felt a little backed up, not quite springing forward with as much zest as you would have liked. While on this retrograde journey, Mercury in Aries made a couple of squares to Saturn in Capricorn, perhaps forcing us to slow down even more for the obstacles in our way. Today, Mercury is moving forward again and makes the final square to Saturn to bring the retrograde experience to its conclusion. The Moon in Virgo contributes a desire to find the useful lessons in the challenges we’ve recently experienced. The opposition between the Moon and Neptune, later in the day, invites us to expand our notion of what it means to be useful. Empathy for our common struggles connects us and teaches us what is possible.

Moon enters Libra 8:13 pm CDT
April 26—Gibbous Moon: Budding. Experiences today might remind us that no matter how conscious we think we are, there remain things hidden away in our psyches that can surprise us when they emerge. The underworld is deep. And dark. When Mars and Pluto (both in Capricorn) conjoin today, we may notice the hidden suddenly appearing in the light of day. We may notice that we haven’t quite finished transforming sources of trauma or repression. We also may notice that with a certain willingness to recognize these things, we are given the power to act and choose. We aren’t pristinely perfect but we are powerful. Choose your authentic power today. It can be a force for change. We can stand up against those powers that don’t want us to be impactful. That is an important choice.

This lunar cycle reaches the point where we muster more energy to complete the work or realize the dream. Perhaps, inspired by the Aries seeds of this cycle, you are dreaming about a renewed sense of self. Perhaps this is new identity. Perhaps it is a reaffirmation of an already recognized identity. Sense into the role personal power plays in who we are. Explore your fears around personal power. Acknowledge the responsibility that comes from having power. Mars in Capricorn goads us to act with integrity. This is a source of power, the kind of power that serves life and self.

Moon in Libra
Friday, April 27.
Relationship plays a big role in the quest for identity. We are not isolated actors imposing our wills on the world. We are intimately interconnected. The Moon in Libra reminds us of relationship’s impact on the individual’s journey. I see in others multiple identities that I am curious about exploring. I am also a mirror of identity for those around me. This exchange of impact and significance fuels the growth of this season. The Moon opposes Mercury in Aries and makes a square to Saturn in Capricorn. Notice tensions around identity, relationship, and responsibility. This dance isn’t always easy but can still be meaningful. Negotiation and communication help us stay present and committed.

Moon in Libra
Saturday, April 28.
Yesterday’s celestial influences deepen into possible crisis or action today. The Libra Moon provides contrast for the Aries mission of this lunar cycle. Identity is tied to relationship. How willing are we to see from another’s viewpoint? The Moon makes a square to Pluto and Mars in Capricorn. It might feel like a power struggle, when it is really about acknowledging that we need each other. Some of us will want to preserve the peace at any cost. Some of will want to fight. Is there a way to shake up worn out patterns around conflict?

Follow the Moon: New Moon in Aries

Moon in Aries
April 15, 2018—New Moon: Seeding

This New Moon could feel big simply because Mercury is finally going direct. I don’t usually equate Mercury’s retrograde periods as being the cause of major upheavals, but this recent one, which ended the day before the Aries New Moon, might be an exception. This three-week period felt harder to me. Things moved very slowly. My brain felt foggy. Details kept getting lost. I overbooked my time, which led to feeling overwhelmed. Did you notice that? The good news is that things are due to shift. This Aries New Moon, begun on April 15, is a good opportunity to set down a new pattern and have a new relationship to time and details. Things will also speed up as Mercury begins to go forward. We will hardly notice that Mercury was ever retrograde at all (that’s human memory for you) after Mercury in Aries makes the last of three squares to Saturn in Capricorn on April 25. That’s when we are done learning what we needed to learn from this particular retrograde period.

We’ve been incubating something in this slow and backwards time. Now it hatches. The lunar cycle that begins on April 15 is about a new start. What gets you moving forward? Where do you want to go? Perhaps the better question for Aries is not about where you want to go, but how do you want to get there? Aries doesn’t give a lot of forethought to where it is going. It’s hard to choose a destination when you are not sure just who you are. Aries is also about identity. Aries says our beginnings come from a sense of self. I had the pleasure of spending the past weekend at the Trans Voices Festival in Minneapolis. A glorious spectrum of gender identities were present at this conference. I heard so many moving stories about the struggles and joys of searching for and claiming identity. Each person’s story inspired me to take a look at my identity too. Identity is not static. We get to keep asking. We get to keep going deeper into the question of who decides our identities. We get to ask ourselves, who we are now?

This question of identity is ongoing. For this lunar cycle, perhaps you want to notice how identity flows from one celestial influence to another. Each influence changing the pattern just a little. Each change to the pattern giving a new flavor to who we are. There is a great fear of fluid identity in the dominant culture. Why is that? That’s a pattern that can change as well. Perhaps fluidity shows us how to be responsive and adaptable to the moment. Maybe we need this quality as we go forward into our beginnings.

In the chart for the New Moon, Uranus in Aries is conjoined the Sun and Moon. Our senses are attuned to change. A big change occurs just a few days later on April 18, when Uranus enters Taurus. Uranus spends seven years in a sign. It moves into Taurus now for a bit and then back into Aries for a few months before finally entering Taurus in March 2019. This transition from Aries to Taurus signals a brand new way to think about change and revolution. It brings our attention to the Earth big time. The Aries to Taurus shift represents the impact of identity on our values. This theme shows up this month when the Sun moves into Taurus a few days after this New Moon.

We aren’t done with major Aries influence for the next few years. Chiron, the Wounded Healer, moves into Aries on April 17. Chiron dips back into Pisces from September 2018 to February 2019. Then, Chiron stays in Aries till 2026. We are in for a long period of sensing the wounds around identity and seeking deeper sensitivity and wisdom. What is the impact of identity on our actions? Who do we belong to? Who do we owe amends to? This is one theme. Chiron addresses where we need healing. Other themes for this time in Aries include war, violence, toxic individualism, and isolation.

While planets are stationary their influences are stronger. Saturn and Pluto are both stationing retrograde during the first half of this lunar cycle. These planets raise the stakes. Although Mercury stationing direct will help us feel a stronger sense of forward momentum. These two planets ask us to consider what is most important to us. We may need to go slowly as we figure this out. Mercury in Aries and Mars in Capricorn contacts to Saturn and Pluto will provoke stronger reactions. These occur on April 25 when Mercury squares Saturn, on April 26 when Mars conjoins Pluto, on May 7 when Mercury squares Pluto, and on May 12 when Mercury squares Mars.

Aries influence encourages stepping into the unknown. There is a certain amount of risk. There is a certain amount of naivety involved in our choices and actions right now. Notice where you feel comfortable. Notice where you don’t. What edges of identity are being pushed? How can we better see the fluid nature of ourselves? How can we embrace the Mystery of where our identities will take us next? With the strong Chiron influence in this exploration, we are encouraged to look at harm, the harm we may have done, the harm done to us. Can we fold into this dance of identity both compassion and accountability?

To be human is to become visible
while carrying what is hidden as a gift to others.
To remember the other world in this world
is to live in your true inheritance.

You are not a troubled guest on this earth,
you are not an accident amidst other accidents
you were invited from another and greater night
than the one from which you have just emerged

From “What to Remember When Waking” by David Whyte
