Follow the Moon: Forecast for December 3, 2017 – December 9

Moon in Gemini
December 3—Full Moon: Blossoming

I’ve been reading bits of The Odyssey lately. Recently, someone dear to me has been struggling to return home and compared their journey to the one Odysseus took. Now, I am captured by it. I’ve always loved this story of the hero who longs simply to return home, yet spends years lost on the vast sea subject to the whims of the gods, trying to stay true to his desire. Life isn’t a direct march towards attaining my desire, either. So much of what diverts me from my heart’s longing also teaches me, not only about myself, but about my desire. This month’s lunar cycle has been a journey through the unknown, and the idea of return features strongly.

At the New Moon on November 18, I wrote about Inanna’s journey into the underworld and the importance of how we return from such soul-enriching experiences. This lunar cycle, which began near the end of Scorpio—a sign that invites transformation through darker experiences—has moved into the bright and questing sign of Sagittarius. Sagittarius is the Seeker. Sagittarius looks ahead towards the far horizon, anchored to the desire for emergence, questing constantly for meaning. During this lunar cycle there have been times we might have felt lost in Scorpio’s waters and times when we’ve gotten back on our ships to fight for our returns. Have you noticed? What keeps you constant to your longings? How do you stay true to yourself?

The Gemini Full Moon of December 3 represents a culmination of the Sagittarian journey of leaving and returning. Gemini and Sagittarius are mutable signs, after all. That means they emphasize change and adaptation. They move around a lot. This Full Moon illuminates the process of seeking our hearts’ desires, not necessarily the attainment of them. How we return from the underworld is important. After a period of soul-searching, how do we rejoin the journey home? What anchors our desires? At this Full Moon, Neptune in Pisces and Mercury in Sagittarius are influential and present challenges to clarity. If we must have clear-cut answers about attaining our desires, we most likely will be disappointed. Just like Odysseus, we may need to spend some time lost before we are found again.

Neptune is exactly square to the Sun in Sagittarius and the Moon in Gemini in the chart for the Full Moon. This god (Poseidon) was the primary reason Odysseus had such a hard time returning home. Poseidon was angry with Odysseus and kept throwing challenges at him. Neptune is the planet that sometimes heightens longing and sometimes keeps us from it. When Neptune comes to bring challenges and gifts, the best option can be to let go. The journey has mysteries to reveal and no amount of effort on our parts can hasten our homecomings. You may feel as if your heart is being stretched. You may be feeling too much. Sea journeys can be that way. Another interesting twist of this Full Moon is that Mercury is stationing retrograde in Sagittarius, while conjoining Saturn. Mercury rules travel. While Mercury moves backwards we may be retracing our journeys, reevaluating just where we really want to go, and experiencing one obstacle after another as we figure it out. Because Saturn is part of this process, it matters to us more than usual. Perhaps at the end, we will know better what we want and how to continue our quests.

Jupiter in Scorpio has been actively encouraging transformation and revelation of long-hidden shadows. We’ve seen this as more victims of sexual abuse and harassment come forward. Since Jupiter stays in this sign for a year, we will keep seeing exposure of toxic secrets. At the Full Moon, Jupiter makes a trine to Neptune. Although Neptune plays the challenger in much of the current energies, Neptune and Jupiter are joining forces to help us surrender into the courage and mystery of depth journeys. Healing is available. Perhaps this healing leads to homecoming. Perhaps to greater connection.

Whenever I am feeling lost at sea, this poem by Rumi brings me comfort.

Buoyancy

Love has taken away my practices
and filled me with poetry.
I tried to keep quietly repeating
No strength but yours, but I couldn’t.
I had to clap and sing.
I used to be respectable, chaste and stable,
but who can stand in this strong wind
and remember those things?
A mountain keeps an echo deep inside itself.
That is how I hold your voice.
I am scrap wood thrown in your fire,
quickly reduced to smoke and ash.
I saw you and became that empty.
This emptiness, more beautiful than existence,
it obliterates existence, and yet when it comes,
existence thrives and creates more existence.
The sky is blue.
The world is a blind man sitting beside the road.
But whoever sees your emptiness
sees beyond the blue and the blind man.
A great soul hides like Muhammad or Jesus
moving through a crowd in a city where no one knows him.
To praise is to praise
how one surrenders to the emptiness.
To praise the sun is to praise your own eyes.
Praise, the ocean. What we say, a little ship.
So the journey goes on,
and no one knows where.
Just to be held by the ocean
is the best luck we could have.
It is a total waking up.
Why should we grieve that we have been sleeping?
It does not matter how long we have been unconscious.
We are groggy, but let the guilt go.
Feel the motions of tenderness around you.
the buoyancy.

Forecast for December 4, 2017 – December 9

Moon enters Cancer 2:37 pm CST
Monday, December 4.
The Moon in Gemini opposes recently retrograde Mercury and Saturn (both in Sagittarius) before it moves into Cancer later in the day. This combination of Mercury and Saturn is significant. The more fluid but accountable we can be about our stories and beliefs, the better. This is tricky. Why wouldn't it be? Mercury likes to create puzzles and challenges. Perhaps, we are learning the difference between standing up for truth and keeping an open mind about our beliefs. This discernment influences just action. It helps us navigate challenging ethical dilemmas. We are only getting started with this Mercury retrograde period. Mercury stations direct on December 22 and doesn’t finish its conversation with Saturn until January. The evening hours are good for spending time at home. We recharge at our hearths.

Moon in Cancer
Tuesday, December 5.
Another planet changes direction this week. Chiron in Pisces stations direct. Chiron has been retracing its steps in the sign of the compassionate healer since July. An inward journey has been completed. The renewal of empathy and vulnerable connection reaches a new stage of expression. This fits perfectly with a grand water trine of the Moon in Cancer, Neptune in Pisces, and Jupiter in Scorpio influencing the day. A wise sea-kayaking friend recently taught me the technique of meeting a large wave by leaning into it. This metaphor is perfect for today. Lean into vulnerability and the places of raw emotion. Remember the healer is present too. Maybe these are the right waves. Maybe this is what your soul needs.

Moon enters Leo 2:37 pm CST
December 6—Disseminating Moon: Fruiting. The waning phases of a lunar cycle are for reflecting back on what we’ve experienced so far. We aren’t pushing forward so much as discerning what we’ve learned, what we’ve harvested from our New Moon intentions. Think back to November 18 when this cycle began. The seeds were planted on the threshold between Scorpio transformations and Sagittarius expansions. Have you felt the pull to move in, then out and back in? What stands out as the most important lesson from these experiences? What wisdom do you now carry with you?

Retrograding Mercury is weaving all kinds of connections today. Mercury conjoins Saturn in Sagittarius for the second time since turning retrograde on December 3. Mercury also makes a sextile aspect to Mars in Libra, while Mars and Saturn connect through a sextile. Options are opening up but it is too soon to bring them to completion. It may be too soon to even begin, but we notice a shift. Mars in Libra is a passionate actor for justice. Perhaps we are given more support from Saturn to have those difficult conversations about conflict. Perhaps, if we stay open-minded, but not wishy washy when it comes to our truths, we make breakthroughs in relationships. The Moon in Leo encourages risk. Not everything goes smoothly, but we are encouraged anyway.

Moon in Leo
Thursday, December 7.
Today we might feel that too much of a good thing is great. When Jupiter is involved, it is easy to go overboard. The energy since the Full Moon may have been a little wonky, not altogether bad, but restless and emotional at the same time. Today’s transits are encouraging, maybe even to a fault. The trine between the Moon in Leo and Venus in Sagittarius is flirty. The square between the Moon and Jupiter in Scorpio is downright sexy and possibly a little dangerous. The interplay between light and dark is enticing.

Moon enters Virgo 5:08 pm CST
Friday, December 8.
Fire is the teacher today. There’s a grand fire trine early in the day. Moon in Leo, Uranus in Aries, and Mercury and Saturn in Sagittarius are joining forces to move things along as only fire can. Fire has many methods of doing that, by the way. At its core, fire is about energy. Energetic awareness can lead us to the deadened places that need our attention, it can give us the energy to act, it can infuse our actions with joy. Fire is a transformer and a consumer. Notice how your fires are burning and why. This investigation leads to a focus on pragmatic solutions when the Moon moves into Virgo this evening (U.S. time zones). Self-awareness helps us know what needs tending to next.

Moon in Virgo
Saturday, December 9.
The big news is that Mars moves into Scorpio today, there till January 27. If we thought Jupiter in Scorpio was kicking up some dust, get ready for the ruler of Scorpio to come clean house. There are messes galore. The underworld has been keeping track of our obligations and responsibility to life. It is probably a good idea to check in on your account too. This means daring to live fully, with all our senses alive, engaging with the force of life that is ready to flow back into everything. Messes will be exposed and life will return. The Moon in Virgo is on board to clean house too. Purging, coming clean, is a way to make room for renewal. The Moon, Venus in Sagittarius, and Neptune in Pisces make a challenging aspect pattern. The tendency to fall head over heels is strong. Our hearts may lead us astray, but in the end, that might be OK anyway.
