Follow the Moon: Forecast for October 5, 2017 – October 11

Forecast for October 5, 2017 – October 11

Moon in Aries
October 5—Full Moon: Blossoming.

This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to walk through the autumn woods and fields of the beautiful Philadelphia Community Farm in Wisconsin, following a brilliant troupe of actors and musicians who were re-imagining Dante’s Purgatorio as a prescription for moving through the grief of the human destroyed-world to ascend into a world where the wild can claim us, but we can not claim the wild.  In a week that has been very challenging, this play represented for me a ray of hope, proof that another story is brewing. There is vision and passion to create a better relationship with the wild. Where there is grief, there can also be beauty.

I don’t feel like writing glib responses to tragedy tonight. I also don’t feel like re-invoking horrors. What I do want to do is notice the longing to inhabit a world where grief and joy feed our humanness. I want to think small while loud voices are screaming about the enormity. I want to slow down when my heart and belly are tightened into fight and flight. I want to risk connection even when embodied systems of shame tell me I am safer alone. This lunar cycle feels like a lot of work. But it isn’t asking us to work harder. The drive to conquer and overcome will not move us closer to small, slow, and connected. This might be the biggest paradox that Virgo (the seed sign of this lunar cycle) represents. Virgo is a hard-working sign but it is also a sign of small adjustments and quiet practices. In the Virgo realm, a lot can happen under the surface. Virgo is the holistic healer, the priestess, and dedicant—qualities we so need right now. The demon that can overtake Virgo’s instinct for patience is a drive for perfectionism. Better is not better. The play I saw this weekend suggested that we don’t improve ourselves out of the purgatory we find ourselves in. What we can do is cease struggling. Admit our sorrow. Seek the grace of the wild.

Virgo is not the only influence of this lunar cycle. The Sun moved into Libra right after the New Moon, casting this energy onto our journeys. Libra insists that everything be in relationship. Since everything already is, perhaps Libra is the scale of justice that asks, how are your relationships going? That becomes a vital question at the Full Moon of October 5, with the opposition of Moon in Aries and Sun in Libra. This lunar cycle is offering the opportunity to notice the connection between Virgo and Libra, between dedication and relationship. And that connection is not without significant complications coming from Uranus in Aries opposing Jupiter in Libra right now as well. Uranus is the Awakener. Jupiter is the Believer. Oppositions, oddly enough, represent the point when we start to integrate extreme positions. We’ve reach a breaking point and then see the ways we need to balance and support. This is not a gentle awakening into personal choice and interconnection. This is a survival moment, a necessary ceasing of the struggle (which Aries so likes to do) into the question, how do we reconnect? We cannot omit this reconnection to the wild in the search for our answers. The wild may be the only hope left.

A beautiful connection between Venus and Mars in Virgo at the Full Moon represents a new beginning for our desires. Both of these planets are about the ways we seek and invite the desirable. Venus invites relationship and connection. Mars infuses that invitation with passion and action. The Virgin archetype associated with Virgo is neither sexless nor prudish. Virgo sex has its own flavor, infusing desire with the passions of healing, wholeness, and devotion. If the wild is our only hope, this connection between Venus and Mars suggests that sex energy may be the alchemical force that removes obstacles to our hopes. The Lovers in Virgo are square to Saturn in Sagittarius at the Full Moon, and this represents both the obstacles we meet on the way to union with our desires and the commitment we have to stay on the path. Realize that the thought of giving up is part of the process of knowing and serving the desirable vision.

The Moon in Aries and Sun in Libra represent the need to reintegrate the personal with the relational. Aries is daring and foolish where Libra is balanced and careful. These signs are ruled by the Lovers, Mars and Venus. We are invited to go past our comfort zones while at the same time remaining in relationship, considering and questioning our impact. It is impossible to do this work of re-wilding alone. No single visionary will lead us from our hells. We reach out and touch, adjust and move on, slowly. It all matters.

Moon enters Taurus 6:56 pm CDT
Friday, October 6.
The best channels of communication come from the heart under the influence of Mercury in Libra in a quincunx aspect to Neptune in Pisces. The longing for communication that reaches across misunderstanding is strong and difficult. As we encounter those moments when words fail, remember we communicate on so many other levels too. Most likely we’ll be looking for patience too. While the Moon is still in impetuous Aries, it riles up the opposition between Uranus in Aries and Jupiter in Libra. What needs to be said for justice? For connection? We don’t have to squash our passions in order to be open to the other. The evening may be a better time to work our differences or reach understandings when the Moon enters grounding Taurus.

Moon in Taurus
Saturday, October 7.
As the Moon in Taurus connects encouragingly with Neptune in Pisces and strongly with Pluto in Capricorn, find your peace in the wild. Wendell Berry said it better:

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
—The Peace of Wild Things

Moon enters Gemini 8:44 pm CDT
October 8—Disseminating Moon: Fruiting. Poignant harvests of this lunar cycle come forward at this time. A key transit of this lunar cycle has been the conjoining of Venus and Mars in Virgo. The conjunction of the planets ruling desire and fulfillment occurs on average every 18 months. (There are variations due to retrograde.) Every conjunction is a seed, a moment when we set intentional magic into the cauldron of becoming. The Lovers in Virgo are dedicants to beauty. As Virgo is an integrator into wholeness and healing, the Lovers within each of us, entice us to find missing pieces, bring in contradictions, love our shadows. The purifying nature of Virgo struggles with such things. There is paradox here. Today, Venus makes a square aspect to Saturn in Sagittarius. October 11, Mars will square Saturn. This period of Saturn influence represents a challenge to what we truly desire. The Saturn challenge, which feels like obstruction and failure, is a moment to intensify our desires and bring them into manifestation. What will we hold onto even when we doubt? We can expect this Saturn influence to be strong over the entire Venus/Mars cycle that ends in August 2019, when the Lovers come back together.

In addition to the important square between Venus and Saturn today, Mercury conjoins the Sun in Libra at the superior conjunction. This represents the “full moon” phase of their synodic cycle. We are harvesting messages, illuminating Libran wisdoms. These messages may be about personal relationships as well as collective ones. We have the opportunity to reap a stronger awareness of the balances forces of the world—from micro-adjustments to full on revolutions, relationships invite change. What are you learning about change?

The Taurus Moon (for most of the day in CDT) cradles these influences. Embodied explorations are called for and will yield important insights. Use your senses.

Moon in Gemini
Monday, October 9.
Yesterday, Sun and Mercury came together in Libra. Today they form a square to Pluto. Illumination comes from the shadowy depths. Notice the pull down and within to seek a deeper relationship with ourselves. Notice the need to bring up repressed memories. Find a welcoming place to lay these memories down to be transformed and healed. We may act as midwives of this healing process for others too. In the outer world, toxic power systems are confronted. A desperate desire for justice arises. As we notice changes in the world, be fed by the wild and leave behind your despair.

Moon enters Cancer 10:38pm CDT
Tuesday, October 10.
A week of massive transitions continues. Jupiter enters Scorpio today. Jupiter remains in a sign for about a year. This gives us time to settle into new discoveries in the Scorpio realms. Jupiter invites the big stories, the wonders of discovery. Scorpio, fixed water sign, represents the depths of our souls, the darkness of transformations, the struggle against and acceptance of death. Jupiter has finished a year’s journey through Libra. We still resonate with those lessons about relationship and justice. We sense how momentary but eternal Balance is. We tip into the dark, now. Venus in Virgo opposes Chiron in Pisces, which is part of a grand mutable cross today while the Moon remains in Gemini (includes Saturn in Sagittarius) Mutability is unsettling. We may have a hard time focusing. Messages are sent and received and we feel so many shifting energies. The Venus/Chiron connection feels vulnerable. Slow down, there is time to understand what these feelings are telling you.

Moon in Cancer
Wednesday, October 11.
Mars in Virgo forms a square to Saturn in Sagittarius. What are your brick walls? Do you feel as if you are banging your head and getting nowhere? Well, this transit explains that. Saturn is putting on the breaks. Yet frustrations also bring opportunities to understand our desires a little bit better. Decide what needs to be pared away and come back to the quest. Honor dedication. Honor service.

Venus in Virgo makes a puzzling connection to Uranus in Aries. Have you been holding back desire? Perhaps this transits nudges us to greater states of dedication infused with beauty and radical change. We are still evolving, experimenting with the edges of love. What do yours feel like?
