Follow the Moon: July 30, 2017 - August 6

I am looking for inspiration. Why turn to my computer? To writing? Right now, what is the inspiration—beyond commitment, beyond obligation—to spark this creation? One week into this lunar cycle seeded in Leo, I am casting my net. Looking for inspiration. What will feed this spark of intention? What will capture my soul and heart so I am ready and eager to create and share that creation?

Each of us has a different story about creativity. For some, it is as easy as lifting a finger. Creative flow is very accessible. Or if not effortless, these people know that it can be found eventually. A net cast for long enough will yield a catch. For some, there are voices of judgment, voices of shame that stifle the process, and maybe even trigger trauma responses that freeze the impulse altogether. Comparison to others is another demon of the creative process. From this, other stories about recognition and output snarl the joy of creative endeavor. Often, I wonder why I try? Despair and hopelessness suck the life out of creativity. I am describing different people, but really, I think I am describing what any of us, at one time or another, can feel about our creativity. This flame is not a simple thing.

Creativity is Leo’s lifeblood. This season, which occurs at the height of summer in the northern hemisphere, is inspired by the Sun’s gifts to us all. This week, Pagans celebrate the Firsts Harvests holy day also known as Lammas and Lughnasad. The Sun has ripened these gifts from the fertile Earth. This season is a time to note our stories about gifts, creativity, and fire. Where do we stand in our “right-sized” recognition of innate creativity? How do we seek inspiration? What blocks the Sun’s light? What makes it burn too brightly?

Looking for inspiration, I took a break from writing. I walked along the Mississippi River, which flows blocks away from where I live. Along the trail, bright yellow wild flowers glowed in the growing dusk. Across the river, the setting Sun was lighting up the trees reflected in the still water. It was a serene and lively moment. The Sun played a role in creating it. Each of us is a Sun. If astrology teaches us nothing else, this is enough. Each of us is an imprint of the Sun at our birth. Each of us carries the Sun’s gifts through this life. Whatever stories we have about creativity, this is our birthright, to be a Sun.

Fires need to be fed. They also need other things, like containment and space, but fires can and will go out if they are not tended. This lunar cycle is an opportunity to hone our fire tending skills. This is connected to being right-sized about our creative gifts. Flames do not need to be large to make an impact. Neither does too meager of a flame serve the web of greater connectivity. The right-sized flame can be adjusted to the circumstances. A right-sized flame is a tool for service, right relationship, and creativity itself. As the Moon waxes this week, tend your fire. Notice what turns them up and how to regulate them down, if needed. Become an artist of the fire.

Moon in Scorpio
July 30—First Quarter Moon: Sprouting. In our culture there is deep conditioning around claiming our right-sizedness. This concept of right-sizedness is taught in my spiritual tradition as the quality of knowing when to expand and when to retract our pride, power, and passion. Right-sizedness isn’t a static state placed squarely in the middle. It is an ability to assess and correct what is really going on with our egos. It is a necessary skill for empowered relationship and action in this world. And that is why it is incredibly subversive. We get dual messages about our egos. American culture glorifies rugged individuals who pursue their own agendas against all others (inflated ego). At the same time, we are told we shouldn’t check in with others about how we are doing. We mustn’t ask for reflection about our impact because this is weakness, leaving us wondering why the journey of the rugged individual is so hard, why we are failing (shame and deflation). Neither state, going it alone or relying on others for affirmation, feels helpful. Ego is problematic but useful. Receiving praise and constructive feedback from others ensures relationship and the ability to grow. The Leo Sun has something to teach us this lunar cycle about all this. The first quarter phase is a chance to deepen into the challenges and goals we have around right-sized efforts.

The Moon in Scorpio (fixed water) confronts Leo (fixed fire) intention. We might fear that water will put out the fire but this is not the Scorpio’s purpose. Scorpio’s desire is to deepen us through the emergence of shadow into emotional awareness. We are hobbled by a culture of whiteness that does not want us to know our right-sized pride, power, and passion. Scorpio reminds us of the pain of living this way. Possibly, this pain moves us to make changes. Remember that right-sizedness isn’t a static state. We must go to the edges, inner and outer, to know when to retract and when to expand. Scorpio gives feedback about our mistakes and our successes. It is an ever-evolving process. One could call it life.

Venus, in curious Gemini, makes a square to Chiron in Pisces. We may feel the sensitivity of going too far or not far enough in our relationships. Be gentle with yourself. Venus also makes an encouraging sextile to Uranus in Aries. This transit emboldens us. We are ready for change, we expand into new places of relationship and learning. The Moon’s square to Mars in Leo pricks our egos. Stay steady. The Moon will form a soothing trine to Neptune in Pisces later in the day. Let water be the healer.

Moon in Scorpio
Monday, July 31.
Here’s another Scorpio Moon day to challenge our ego responses. The ideal of shared power makes for an intriguing investigation under this influence. What taboos do you encounter when you expand? What shames cause habitual contractions? The sextile between the Moon and Pluto in Capricorn encourages a shift towards shared power if we dare. Venus enters Cancer today. We also want to share belonging. Where is the edge between power and belonging? A worthy relationship encourages us to be powerful and responsive. We can also encourage that in others.

Moon enters Sagittarius 7:01 am CDT
Tuesday, August 1.
The Moon moves back into a fire sign, giving a boost to dramatic Mars in Leo and challenging pragmatic Mercury in Virgo. You may notice the contrast between expansive desire to shine and burn everything up. We consume adventure. We give spark to the discovery of truth, while Mercury says, slow down and prioritize. Notice the edge between the inspiration of one’s personal flame and the commitment to be of service. Does this edge help you be right-sized?

Moon in Sagittarius
Wednesday, August 2.
Traditional Lammas/Lughnasad/First Fruits. This Pagan holy day has many names but the celebration is often centered around the same thing—sharing our gifts and honoring the Sun. Next week, on the Full Moon, the Sun will be in the center of Leo, the astronomical moment of First Fruits. Between now and then, reflect on your gifts. Practices of gratitude and connection with others about how our gifts are being received will move us into the magical transformations offered by this Leo lunar cycle. This work is both about being witnessed and witnessing others. Give the gift of your attention. Technically, Uranus will station retrograde in Aries just after midnight tomorrow, but we feel the stationing of this powerful planet today as well.  Uranus in a fire sign, is using the energy of awakening to ensure we are true to ourselves. This can be tricky energy to navigate when being right-sized is also about being in relationship. There is an edge between it being all about me and forgetting that we each have passions to serve in our lives. Let this awareness feed your celebrations of First Harvests.

Moon enters Capricorn 7:36 pm CDT
August 3—Gibbous Moon: Budding. In Mary Oliver’s beautiful poem about paying attention to everything on a summer day, she finishes by asking this question: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” This is the summer question inspired by Leo. Life is so precious and we are in the thick of it in the summer season. Gardens are producing, there is plenty of daylight to linger into enchanting evenings outdoors, and another season of personal growth is worth celebrating too. What is ready to bloom in you? This phase of the Moon exposes our yearnings. In this moment, ask yourself what is really worth giving this wild and precious life to.

The feeling that life may be passing us by could be strong as Uranus in Aries stations retrograde today. Stations (apparent motion standing still before moving in the opposite direction) increase a planet’s influence. If you’ve been resisting change, then a wake up call may come to hit your over the head. The energy is unsettled and erratic. What is the passion that moves you? What is the change that needs expression? The Moon in Sagittarius, before entering Capricorn later, makes a reinforcing trine to Uranus. This fire energy is strong. Given the themes of this lunar cycle, pay attention to the size and impact of your passions. What helps you be right-sized in this moment? How do you know?

Moon in Capricorn
Friday, August 4.
Jupiter in Libra makes a square to Pluto in Capricorn for the third time since November 2016. These two formed the second square in March 2017 and today marks the final time in this cycle. Notably at the beginning in November, activists were reacting to Trump’s election. In March, we saw Trump’s Cabinet installed and the beginning of taking down several federal institutions. Currently, we see Trump’s White House undergoing transitions that appear to be a fast unraveling of any kind of order or authority. Jupiter in Libra is on a quest for justice. Pluto holds the secrets and toxicity of corrupt power. As Jupiter contacts Pluto, we see more corruption and have the opportunity to act for transformation of it. It is a karmic contact where we reap what we have sown. The same energies influence the personal sphere as well. We look at the ways we need to rebalance and possibly atone for past mistakes. The Moon in Capricorn reinforces the seriousness of our situation.

Moon in Capricorn
Saturday, August 5.
The Moon conjoins Pluto today while the influence of the Jupiter/Pluto square is still strong. (See yesterday’s forecast.) The energy of accountability moves us toward resolution. What is the purpose of accountability in our relationships? How does this help us to have right-sized impact? What are the demons of self-judgment that diminish our creativity? When Pluto is involved, we have the opportunity to see and transform old patterns. That feeling is strong today. Another planetary influence adds to the complexity. The Sun in Leo makes a quincunx aspect to Neptune in Pisces. We are driven to understand the paradoxical relationship between personal creativity and selfless service. Be careful of messiah complex. No one is that special. Yet each of us is essential.

Moon enters Aquarius 7:15 am CDT
Sunday, August 6.
Tomorrow’s Full Moon will also be a lunar eclipse. We are building to a crescendo in this lunar cycle. The Moon in Aquarius begins to shine another light upon the personal mission to find right-sized relationship. The collective, represented by Aquarius, gives us plenty of feedback but can’t always be trusted to give appropriate feedback. We can be caught in the story of Self, even when we group together. A chance to see the dynamic between the collective and the self is offered today. It is vital we develop new ways to cultivate healthy exchange between these sides. Possibly it helps to get out of binary vision and see the issue in entirely new ways. Perhaps we are able to dismantle the isolating story of the rugged individual while releasing dependency on the group for a definition of self worth.

Follow the Moon: Forecast for July 23 - July 29

By now you’ve undoubtedly heard that there is a great big solar eclipse happening August 21. It’s been coined the Great American Eclipse because the eclipse path of totality will move in a narrow band across the U.S. from Oregon to South Carolina. This eclipse is rather a big deal. Astrological lore says that eclipses, which happen a minimum of twice a year, are potent when they make an aspect to a chart but are most potent in the location where they can be viewed. It isn’t often a total eclipse can be seen over this much land and even more rare that it will be viewed from so much of the U.S.

Here is what Fred Espenak, an eclipse expert who worked for NASA, says about this rare opportunity to see a total solar eclipse in the U.S.:

“If we only count total eclipses visible from the lower 48 states, we have 4 eclipses from 1951 to 2000, and 4 more from 2001 to 2050. Put another way, there are 8 chances to view a total eclipse from the USA in the period spanning just over a single lifetime.”

(Also on this site are maps showing eclipse paths from 1951 to 2045 The next total eclipse to go over a large swath of the U.S. occurs in 2024.)

Eclipses stoke our imaginations. They evoke wonder and a little dread when the light of the Sun is extinguished. Something important seems to be happening. People want to know what it means. We begin to tell stories, look at patterns, find correspondences, and create meaning. This was true at the dawn of time. It is still true. I want to use this moment of wondering to set mindful intention to work with the unique opportunities offered by totality. The eclipse happens at next month’s New Moon on August 21, but the work begins this month. And that is because there will be two Leo New Moons this year. One occurs on July 23 and the next on August 21. The Leo New Moon of July 23 sets the stage for the magic of the next New Moon of totality.

Eclipses are magical. An eclipse is a potent opportunity to shed or transform the past in a moment’s time. The sudden darkness is a cauldron of transformation. Ordinary life is paused, whether we choose it or not, and something new is born in the odd darkness. When the light returns, we are on our way, traveling new paths, seeing life through new eyes. The Sun is the guide to magical intention for this Leo Eclipse. The Sun will be eclipsed in the sign that is ruled by the Sun. The Sun and the sign Leo represent the very essence of selfhood. Through following the next two Leo Moons, we can unpack issues around ego, self-worth, and creativity. We can compost outworn ideas of isolation and scarcity. We can remember that the Sun is our star and we are made of stars meant to shine together.

I’ve been thinking about right-sizedness lately. What does it mean to have a right-sized ego, a right-sized sense of myself, a right-sized relationship to my gifts and challenges? I long for clarity around my size and impact. This balanced sense of self seems key to integrity. It seems key to turning around the ways we’ve inflated individualism to the point that we may destroy our environment before we admit we are in interdependent relationship with all beings. A moment of humility could help us find correct action. A moment of pride could help us remember we are conduits of illumination. This Leo lunar cycle I plant the seeds of right-sizedness, to know my worth and be responsible for my impact.

Moon enters Leo 3:33 am CDT
July 23—New Moon: Seeding. The New Moon occurs at 0 degrees Leo. This first moment of a sign epitomizes the pure potential of any New Moon. We plant possibilities now to be further transformed through the total eclipse of the Sun at the next New Moon. Perhaps you sense that we are standing at the brink of change and possibilities. What will you dedicate yourself to at this time? There is a certain amount of risk involved. With eclipses you never know what you will get, but the potential is great. Leo rules the heart. This is a time to invoke wholeheartedness, even if it is risky. Mars in Leo conjoins the Moon and Sun adding a willingness to risk. Leo is a risk-loving sign anyway. This lunar cycle is an opportunity to study energy, what adds life and joy, what takes it away. Sometimes we resort to risky behavior in order to feel alive again. What else kindles your aliveness? What kind of risk is worth taking?

At this New Moon, Venus in Gemini opposes Saturn in Sagittarius. Venus sociability meets Saturn stoicism. Judgment can obstruct connection on one hand. On the other hand, we are evaluating our connections to see which have real value. Feeling squashed by judgment interferes with the wholeheartedness of this Leo New Moon. Saturn has a job to do and this influence right now is important. Saturn will turn direct during this lunar cycle. After that, Saturn continues through the rest of its transit through Sagittarius until entering Capricorn in December. We get to reflect on what we have learned from Saturn over the past two years. Saturn has challenged Sagittarian desires for freedom, but has also given us the gift of discernment about truth and values. We can turn that discerning eye to our relationships this lunar cycle. What is true? What supports meaning? What diminishes it?

Dates that trigger the eclipse. Mercury plays an important role in this lunar cycle that leads to a solar eclipse on August 21. Mercury may be the trigger for unexpected events, which are associated with eclipses. On July 24, the day after the New Moon, Mercury reaches 28 degrees Leo, the degree of the solar eclipse and the degree where Mercury will station direct on September 5. Mercury turns retrograde at 11 Virgo on August 12. Tomorrow, Mercury not only triggers the eclipse degree but enters the pre-retrograde “shadow zone,” during which we begin to feel the disorienting effects of Mercury’s impending retrograde. Mars reaches the eclipse degree on September 2 and makes a trine to revolutionary Uranus in Aries at the same time. Mars and retrograding Mercury conjoin at the eclipse degree on September 3. We might very well be feeling the effects of the eclipse when Venus reaches the eclipse degree on September 18. If a spell is a prayer backed by action, the spell we begin at this eclipse will reverberate through these moments.

There are no guarantees that the desires we infuse with this magic will manifest in the ways we can envision now. Within the fertile darkness of an eclipse, undreamed of options will arise. Eclipses impact people who are not paying attention as well. Because the path of totality covers the U.S., shifts are coming to this nation. I am quite interested in how this eclipse will impact Donald Trump whose Mars and Ascendant are very near the eclipse degree. As they say, stayed tuned. And stay open.

Moon in Leo
Monday, July 24.
Mercury reaches the August 21st eclipse degree, which also happens to be the degree Mercury will station direct after turning retrograde on August 12. Pay attention to mercurial messages that could foretell what effects this eclipse may have on you. Under this New Moon phase of the lunar cycle, dream about the seeds you wish to plant in Leo’s soil. Venus in Gemini opposes Saturn in Sagittarius. We can use the discernment of Saturn in Sagittarius to evaluate our relationships, not only to people, but to values as well. Venus in this sign encourages curiosity. Perhaps Saturn is challenging us to take curiosity to the next level. What does that mean to you? Most likely you are chomping at the bit to create change. Mercury at the eclipse degree is making a trine to Uranus in Aries. This revolutionizing influence is curiously softened by empathy and compassion as Mercury also makes a quincunx to Chiron in Pisces. Don’t hold back the feelings, they may help us make the breakthroughs we need.

Moon enters Virgo 5:32 am CDT
Tuesday, July 25.
The Moon and Mercury enter Virgo today. This reinforces Virgo influence. Mercury, as the ruler of Virgo, makes a strong impact. We look at our harvests. We begin to notice that this growing season has taken a shift and look to making improvements or creating order so we can enjoy the outcome of work. You may notice an uptick in nervous energy as we get the first inkling that our lives need our attention right now. How will you honor your work and this season of ripening into fullness? Mercury is preparing the retrograde road and will be returning to this spot in the zodiac on August 31 and September 9. We are weaving a pattern into our lives.

Moon in Virgo
July 26—Crescent Moon: Germinating.
Under this phase of the Moon our lunar intentions take flight. We feel this energy even more at this time due to the conjoining of Mars and the Sun in Leo. A two-year cycle of Sun/Mars energy begins with this transit. Think of it as the new moon phase of Mars impact. Mars represents will, passion, energy, and anger. We can use this charged moment to feed our lunar intentions. Leo teaches us about the gifts of fire. Fire can bring uplift and transformation. It infuses our lives with joyful participation, it helps renew flagging energy, and illuminates what we truly desire. Fire gives life just as the Sun, Leo’s ruler, gives life. This phase and transit is a wonderful opportunity to cultivate the tools that help us rekindle our fires. It is important to notice what energy looks and feels like to you. This is less mysterious than you might think. Energy is what gets noticed first. Are you drawn or repelled? Are you excited or bored? Is it an effort to move your body or is there ease and excitement about moving even a little? We can begin to notice what helps us have more energy. And even further, can cultivate the type of energy that supports our intentions. Be inquisitive about energy today.

For instance, what will we notice about the energy of the Moon in Virgo today? This mutable earth sign is actively integrating pragmatic discernment. A square between the Moon and Saturn in Sagittarius may feel like a lot of pressure to get it right. Virgo’s gift is order and devotion. Virgo’s shadow is perfectionism. Notice the difference between these qualities in your expectations.

Moon enters Libra 10:37 am CDT
Thursday, July 27.
Find time for beauty today. The Moon moves into Libra creating an encouraging sextile to the Sun and Mars in Leo. Let the beauty you love move you to create. Let go of self-limiting beliefs about art and artistry. What if we feed the interconnected web of relationship with acts of beauty? What if this isn’t considered a nice treat but an essential part of life? Like food. Like shelter. Let’s step up. Beauty as guide informs our choices, helping us to remember balance and impact. The scales of Libra’s Moon helps us with the Leo intention of living right-sized—mindful of impact and responsible for sharing our creative gifts freely.

Moon in Libra
Friday, July 28.
Notice the large forces in your life that challenge your sense of balance. The Moon in Libra conjoins Jupiter in Libra and then makes a square to Pluto in Capricorn. Next week, Jupiter and Pluto make an exact square with each other. Think back to November 2016 when Jupiter and Pluto made the first square to recall the intensity of this transit. For instance, remember the reaction when Trump got elected? These two planets influenced awareness about how the election was a challenge to justice and right-relationship, not to mention survival of the planet. We sense into another moment of how important our choices are right now.

Moon enters Scorpio 7:23 pm CDT
Saturday, July 29.
A few days ago, I invited you to notice energy. What are you noticing about the pressure to be actively instigating change? Sometimes the pressure is so intense, we shut down. That is OK to notice too. Perhaps our bodies are telling us something about pressure and about change. Where can you place yourself where you feel the desire to create change but don’t freeze when you entertain the idea of backing that desire with action? That is a sweet spot. Literally. Move into that. Be the change and be alive in joy. The Moon in Libra for most of the day encourages balance and sensitivity to imbalances. As the Moon opposes Uranus in Aries, we may also be aware that some things need to change. Changing our response to pressure is enormous.

Follow the Moon: Forecast for July 16, 2017 - July 22

Moon in Aries
July 16—Last Quarter Moon: Re-seeding. I have this idea that water signs are built for receding. Let me explain. That doesn’t mean that water signs don’t move forward or take initiative or explore new ground, but I mean that water signs have a natural instinct about flowing forward and flowing back, like the tides. They can’t help it. That is what water does. This lunar cycle, seeded in the water sign of Cancer, is now waning and we may notice that we are looking to pull back even while external events seem to ask us to engage and push forward. This internal stress could be a challenge. It may help to notice the riptides within and honor where you are and what you need.

My short key phrase for the Moon in a natal chart is that it represents what we need. The Moon rules Cancer and so we should be paying particular attention to needs this lunar cycle. What is the Moon telling you? This type of emotional intelligence, knowing what we need, is one of the gifts of following the Moon this cycle and all lunar cycles. The Moon tells us that needs shift, tides come in and go out, it is OK to be fluid. In fact, it is necessary (another word related to need). This type of fluidity requires an adept level of perception. It encourages us to be present and focused on the here and now. We have no idea what the future actually holds for us. The best we can do is develop skills for being in this moment. Emotional flexibility is a tool for that.

We are going to need this tool, this week. Strong and stressful aspects may try to pull us off center. Change is present. The Moon in Aries is quick to react. We can become impulsive if we don’t pay attention. Today, the Moon conjoins the planet of change, Uranus. Tomorrow, Mars in Cancer will form an exact square to Uranus. Today, the Moon may activate that transit. Mars square Uranus is one of those energy signatures that warn about abrupt change and being alert to mishaps. Material, kept in the dark, is released by Mercury in Leo’s quincunx aspect to Pluto in Capricorn. In a flash, shadows are illuminated. Given the volatile nature of Moon, Mars, and Uranus in combination, we may see events begin to cascade to a foregone conclusion. Remembering the wisdom of water, how do you choose to respond?

Moon enters Taurus 12:04 am CDT
Monday, July 17.
We may be swept away by beauty today. This version of beauty involves what we can learn, teach, and communicate. Venus in Gemini makes a square aspect to Neptune in Pisces. We are drawn to people who are curious. We are drawn to expanding beyond. The nature of the square presents a challenge. This may come in the form of fantasy or escapism. It might also come in the form of disappointment or cynicism. As we observe our patterns, we can turn towards hopeful possibility. Through loss we begin to gain meaning. Beauty is the activator. The Moon in Venus-ruled Taurus enhances this theme and helps us set firm boundaries around our dreams. The interplay between the Moon, Venus, and Neptune set the stage for another important influence today, a dynamic square between Mars in Cancer and Uranus in Aries. Cancer brings out the nurturer in Mars. Uranus in Aries stirs our passions with the intention to instigate change. Perhaps we get angry about the healthcare bill. Perhaps we are moved to action because we care deeply about others. Perhaps we are anxious about change in our lives. Take a breath before making decisions. What are you feeling? How does water lead you to a deeper place of connection?

Moon in Taurus
Tuesday, July 18.
Opportunities come through connection. These connections may be social or mental. How does one idea lead to another? How does a chance encounter lead to a moment of fate? How do our connections expand from minor associations to significant relationships? Be prepared for synchronistic opportunities as Venus in Gemini makes a trine to Jupiter in Libra. Be ready to say, Yes. Another kind of connection comes from the heart. Mars in Cancer forms a trine to Chiron in Pisces. Connection is vulnerability. We may find the courage to be vulnerable with each other. The Moon in Taurus serves as an anchor if we feel overwhelmed. Our bodies hold wisdom and may help us move into more connection and opportunity.

Moon enters Gemini 2:31 am CDT
July 19—Balsamic Moon: Composting.
"If you have come here to help me, then you are wasting your time…But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together."
-- Aboriginal activists group, Queensland, 1970s.

At the Cancer New Moon, this quote inspired me to notice and enhance my awareness of interconnectivity. Cancer, informed by emotion, turns towards others to help and nurture. Perhaps the lesson of this lunar cycle has been that there is no simply nurturing of others or of self. We must tend to the whole web of interbeing to move us towards real change. Through relationship we must nurture and care for us. Cancer is the sign of the family. Perhaps we are learning to expand this notion of family to mean larger and more complex relationships.

As the Moon moves into Gemini, we notice and long for more and more connection. Gemini is the pollinator energy of the zodiac. Even as this lunar cycle begins to wind down, we are spreading the seeds of possibility. The ruler of Gemini, Mercury (in Leo), makes a harmonious trine aspect to Saturn in another fire sign, Sagittarius. This is a great influence for creative ideas that have structure and longevity. Imagine you’ve been on a journey since the New Moon of June 23. Just now, we see the journey of disparate events and emotions as a cohesive lesson about understanding self and others. Dare to believe your creativity matters.

Moon in Gemini
Thursday, July 20.
Mars moves from Cancer to Leo today. You may have been thinking the summer has not been as much fun as you deserve. Well, here is your chance to change that. We aren’t done with the Cancer lunar cycle, but the new infusion of energy from Leo will help us get perspective on where we’ve been in this cycle. Mars leaps ahead. Embrace your creativity. Embrace the flow of life force energy. We are reaching the peak of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Let the Sun feed every cell. The momentum of change is vastly reinforced (maybe too much so) by a square between the Sun in Cancer and Uranus in Aries. Square aspects provoke change through tension or aggravation. Don’t resist change but make the best possible choices you can. Move on. There’s another significant influence today. Venus in Gemini makes a puzzling quincunx to Pluto in Capricorn. There’s a trickster element to this connection. Impishly we undermine entrenched power systems. Discover the power of light-heartedness.

Moon enters Cancer 3:09 am CDT
Friday, July 21.
Take time to notice the contrast between water and fire during the last two days of the Cancer lunar cycle. Already we feel an upsurge of Leo (fire sign) energy. Mars entered that sign yesterday and the Sun will tomorrow. Water’s influence today comes from the Sun in Cancer (water) forming a trine to Chiron in Pisces (water). Chiron influence may feel initiatory. Where has the journey of heart and emotion taken you in this lunar cycle? Take a moment to honor every emotion, especially the ones you might feel bad about having. Emotions encode memories, hopes, and dreams. I believe they also encode healing. I am reminded of the Rilke quote, “Let everything happen to you … No feeling is final.” No feeling is final, but every feeling can be a teacher and a healer. And if we aren’t ready, then we let them go. There will be more opportunities.

Moon enters Cancer 1:33 am CDT
Saturday, July 22.
Sun enters Leo. Tomorrow’s New Moon occurs in the first degree of Leo. Due to the early degree, the next New Moon will be in Leo, too. That one will be a solar eclipse. Much change is in the air. We might feel excited by this prospect today as the Sun makes it entrance into the fixed fire sign. The Sun is the generous life giver of our solar system and the Sun rules Leo. Everyone has a Sun described in our natal charts by our Sun sign. Each of us has a Sun and is a Sun, possessing creative potential and the solar generosity that shares light with all. With two lunar cycles seeded in Leo, we have the opportunity to set powerful intention around the ways we do both things, create and share. To prepare for that work, take today to let emotional awareness seep into your cells. The Moon is doing some heavy lifting with a square to Jupiter in Libra and an opposition to Pluto in Capricorn. We want to purge the things holding us back from authentic relationship based upon justice and equity. Notice that desire and the passion that backs it. That is water.

About these forecasts: Through following the Moon, the planets, and the wisdom of the seasons and signs, my goal is to offer a useful practice of mindfulness and intention for the thoughtful seeker.

Follow the Moon: Forecast for July 8, 2017 - July 15

Moon in Capricorn
Saturday, July 8. (
In some time zones in the U.S., the Full Moon occurs today. I calculate lunation charts for Washington, D.C. where the Full Moon occurs just after midnight on July 9). As we feel the Full Moon approaching, you might notice extremes in your life. A Full Moon can feel that way since the Moon and Sun are as far apart as they can get right now. If you planted a seed of intention at the New Moon in Cancer on June 23, you might be having a hard time connecting to it. A lot of water and emotion may have shifted the moorings. Can we let that be OK even as we honor that this is part of the dedication to water? Notice where you are. Notice the messages you give yourself about success and failure. These tend to come up under Capricorn influence (where the Moon is today.)

If you are feeling stuck or overwhelmed, ask yourself: What do I need to place within the protective arms of Cancer? What am I nurturing through these challenging times? How might I honor the process? I renew my intention for this lunar cycle as I invite water to teach me how to nurture our interconnections and be nurtured by them.

Moon in Capricorn
July 9—Full Moon: Blossoming. During this Cancer lunar cycle I’ve been thinking how emotions are teachers. I’ve been wondering if my feelings can help me recover awareness of interconnection and interdependence—something research tells us is crucial for human survival. This Cancer lunar cycle has created a space to be held in our emotions. That image sounds lovely, comforting, supportive. But that may not be your experience of this lunar cycle so far. Cancer is holding this space to feel what we feel, but it might take everything we’ve got to stay in that space. Emotions are messy and they definitely hurt sometimes. I know I have stepped in and out. Feelings are arising but I’m not always comfortable with them. How ‘bout you?

A Full Moon often feels expansively emotional. This Full Moon will probably fit that description due to an intense conjoining of Mars with the Sun in Cancer and Pluto with the Moon in Capricorn. Mars and Pluto have a way of getting to the heart of the matter. It takes a bit of courage, but it is possible to see the root causes of fear and defensiveness. It is too easy to project onto others at this time. To truly transform, we may need to be with our own feelings for a while, asking ourselves: Why this? Why now? But be gentle with yourself as you listen. Mars, even in a softy sign like Cancer, can provoke heroic efforts. This muscular approach to emotion may only serve to shut down awareness of what is happening in our hearts. With Pluto involved threats seem very real, and perhaps they are.

As the opposite sign in the zodiac, Capricorn is the balance and mirror for Cancer. If Cancer is the unconditional nurturer, Capricorn is the parent that holds us accountable. Both signs build a supportive structure for growth to happen. Capricorn’s structure is solid. Cancer’s is fluid. What is the balance point between a fluid state and a solid state? Too much earth and we risk cutting off the softening powers of emotion. Too much water and we risk dissolving completely. This Full Moon is a good time to notice where you need structure and where you need flow.

Mars is action-oriented. In Cancer, Mars desires to connect, nurture, and protect. At the Full Moon, Mars is challenged by Saturn in Sagittarius to get it right. The quincunx aspect between these two planets gives a paradoxical twist to how we build our nurturing structures. Sagittarius desires freedom. This sign values truth more than comfort, one of Cancer’s desires. Integration is non-binary. Notice the pull in many directions as we absorb Mars’ and Saturn’s dialog. The best type of meaning to discover under this influence may be the value emotion gives to truth.

It may be a few days before we settle into the truth of this Full Moon. I wonder what happens if we hold the intention of honoring interconnectedness as we encounter waves of emotion? How does that shift our experiences?

Moon enters Aquarius 12:35 am CDT
Monday, July 10.
It might feel like our minds are at odds with our emotions. It can be difficult to hold equal space for both. The Aquarius Moon is better at abstract thinking than it is at emotional sensitivity. You may notice a disconnect today if you were expecting intimate vulnerability and get a slew of ideas instead. The Moon first makes a trine to Venus in Gemini, stimulating ideas and social contact. Then, the Moon opposes Mercury in Leo. Hurt feelings could come from under-appreciation. Hurt feelings could lead to miscommunication. Even if you don’t want to, remember that empathy reinforces interconnection and interconnection helps everyone thrive.

Moon in Aquarius
Tuesday, July 11.
Constructive ideas and conversations are favored today. Don’t expect interactions to be very sensitive.  It can feel like the more we stay in the realm of thought, the better. The Aquarius Moon likes that. The Moon makes a trine to Jupiter in another air sign, Libra, and then makes a sextile to Saturn in Sagittarius. Pay attention to the things that capture your imagination today. You can build on this fascination later.

Moon enters Pisces 10:51 am CDT
July 12—Disseminating Moon: Fruiting. We’ve had a chance to dry out the last couple of days. The Aquarius Moon encouraged stepping back from emotion to imagine how we are connected through our thoughts and ideals. With that perspective, what are you learning about emotion and interconnectedness this lunar cycle? This phase of the Moon supports harvesting the benefits we’ve gained from mindful intention and sharing them with others. With the Moon moving into Pisces, a very fluid and sensitive water sign, we may want to extend that sharing impulse into service work. Don’t resist the impulse to expand through emotion into connection. Pisces influence makes this easy and provides the necessary insight for completion of this lunar cycle dedicated to emotional insight and learning.
The only aspect today occurs in the morning before the Moon moves into Pisces: a sextile between the Moon in Aquarius and Uranus in Aries. Yes, indeed. Air gives us space to feel more. We are refreshed by energized thought. Time to move on.

Moon in Pisces
Thursday, July 13.
A yod aspect pattern points us to the lessons of integration. Jupiter in Libra makes a sextile to Mercury in Leo while both make a quincunx aspect to the conjunction of Moon and Neptune in Pisces. Yods must integrate planets in signs that are strange to each other, and so the prevailing tone is about integrating paradox. Our challenges push us to new understandings. The paradox here is about Piscean surrender, openness, and compassion in a world that is moving quickly, compartmentalizing people and ideas, and concerned with equity and justice. How do we cross boundaries into connection when our differences have never been more apparent? When under stress, Pisces influence can call up memories of trauma. Be gentle with yourself today and tomorrow. Even when we can’t see it, we are interconnected. Find your anchoring connection.

Moon enters Aries 6:52 pm CDT
Friday, July 14.
Yesterday, I wrote about a yod aspect pattern that is in place right now. The Moon has moved off the pattern but the remaining planets are almost exact. Yods provoke breakthroughs when we integrate paradox and contrasts. Neptune in Pisces at the apex of the triangle represents what we need to integrate into the flowing connection between Jupiter in Libra and Mercury in Leo. Ideas, passion for creativity, and activism are strong. What may be missing and hard to find, is a greater connection to the whole. We may be asked to sacrifice a cherished idea in order to make our work larger. The potential to make an impact that reaches many hearts is great. But we might not succeed. Neptune also teaches through disappointments and loss. Another challenging transit puts on the pressure if we aren’t feeling effective. A quincunx aspect between The Sun in Cancer and Saturn in Sagittarius could feel discouraging. Watch out for piercing criticism. Notice how much you give yourself. Since we are all sensitive today, try to offer critique to others that accounts for these feelings that the stakes are high. Honor your ambitions and accept your imperfections.

Moon in Aries
Saturday, July 15.
The last few days have felt like a series of contrasting events and feelings. Perhaps you feel discouraged. Perhaps you feel confused. Notice emotion. With the Moon in Aries, the impulse may be to act forcefully to move away from these emotions. Anger may be a sign that you need to pay more attention. The challenge is to be still enough to notice what we are feeling. What does water teach you about your state of being right now? This Cancer lunar cycle still has plenty of lessons for us. Venus in Gemini and Mercury in Leo invite us to be creative about expressing deeper emotional experiences. We are asked to be alchemists blending air and fire with water. Earth influence is needed to complete the whole. Find your ground. Slow down. Honor emotion. Express yourself.
