Follow the Moon: Forecast for April 25, 2016 - May 1

A thread of attention I’ve been following this lunar cycle is the theme of rekindling life. The current lunar cycle, which began on April 7, was seeded by Aries (cardinal fire). Fire leads the way into this season. In the northern lands, the ingress of the Sun into Aries is the moment of vernal equinox, which is mirrored in the southern parts of the world as the moment of the autumnal equinox. As a fire sign, Aries renews the energy of life returning in the north and brings light for the journey into the darker seasons in the south. Aries fire is a “need fire.” This fire, coming after and before winter, depending on the side of the Earth you live, is a vital fire representing life force. Lighting a “need fire” was a custom of people in Northern Europe, practiced when they encountered a threat to life force. A need fire could purify, bring renewed life, and alert the gods that need was present. I wonder if this Aries lunar cycle isn’t such a time when our need is great, when the fires we are kindling serve a greater purpose.

I’ve noticed that transits this lunar cycle have had a tempering effect on fire. For every surge forward there has been something to check that flow. From the countering energies of water and earth signs to the retrograde of Mars in Sagittarius, there has been reason to pause and wonder about our fires. Fire is often associated with anger and passion. These emotions help us to know when we are in need and teach us to identify our needs. The 11 weeks of Mars retrograde is a good opportunity to really listen to anger and passion. You may notice these emotions are more present while Mars moves retrograde if your pattern is to gloss over anger or defer to other’s passions. If anger is fairly accessible to you, then this retrograde may ask you to temper those impulses. The opportunity is to find more depth and more balance in our fiery passions.

The Aries lunar cycle doesn’t complete until May 6 even though the Sun has now moved into Taurus. The fixed earth sign that follows Aries is another tempering influence that happens each year. First, Aries bursts onto the scene with impulsive daring, then embodied Taurus slows everything down. Attention is paid to sustainable growth and to our bodies’ desires. Earth tamps down fire’s excesses, but the fire doesn’t go out. We learn how to tend and nurture it. This week, Mercury stations retrograde in Taurus. The message from the messenger god is to slow down enough to avoid the common miscues of retrograde periods. And if we can’t avoid them, seek the earth wisdom to handle them with calm attention.  On Friday, Venus enters Taurus and everyone lets out a big sigh. Venus rules this sign. Here, Venus lends the quality of attenuated sensual perception. Think of this as a release of endorphins. What effect will this have on our fires? Fire has other qualities, not just anger and passion. These qualities include joy, creativity, and generosity. Imagine this sensual slowing as necessary to sustaining the wonderful qualities of fire too. And for the need fire? Perhaps earth’s influence creates the steady burn, the clarifying focus, the signal that is strong and determined. There is need. Any number of things need our attention. Yet, with fire’s focus, we can know what is most essential to this moment. What needs your attention most? For the remaining days of this lunar cycle let earth and fire show you the answer.

Forecast for April 25, 2016 — May 1

Moon in Sagittarius
Monday, April 25. It may be hard to focus today. The day starts with an agitating influence from the Moon’s union with retrograde Mars in Sagittarius. It may be hard to settle on what we want or the direction we want to take to get where we’re going. Next, a mutable t-square aspect pattern messes with the ways we usually take in and make sense of information. And it doesn’t help that Mercury is stationing to turn retrograde on Friday, either. The Moon sets off the t-square pattern of Jupiter in Virgo opposing Neptune in Pisces and both planets square to Saturn in Sagittarius. Although the aspects are not exact, these three planets have been working on changing our ways of perceiving and understanding. The Moon reminds us that we are not done with this process. Overall, pay attention to the balance of mind, body, emotion, and spirit.

Moon enters Capricorn 6:54 pm CDT
April 26—Disseminating Moon: Sharing. Earth signs are exerting a big influence upon this fire inspired lunar cycle. On April 7, this lunar cycle began in Aries (cardinal fire). A seed was planted in the season of emergence. Fire is an ally of life force. In the spring season, it is impossible to miss the excitement of life returning. On its own, without any human direction, the green leaf unfurls on the branch. Nature gets busy reproducing and flourishing. Although earth rules the forms that nature takes, fire is the impulse to expand and grow. What are you noticing about the interaction and interdependency of fire with earth in the world around you?

Under this phase of the Moon, we naturally gravitate to sharing our wisdoms, the things we’ve learned from the lunar cycle journey so far. This sharing is generous, spontaneous, much like fire is. With the Moon in a fire sign for most of the day (Sagittarius) and making trines to Uranus and Venus in another fire sign (Aries), dare to share more of yourself.

Moon in Capricorn
Wednesday, April 27. The aspect between the Sun in Taurus and Mars in Sagittarius perfectly exemplifies the contrast and support that earth and fire provide each other.  This quincunx aspect is a paradoxical blending of energies that have nothing in common. The Sun says, “Grow roots.” Mars says, “Let’s travel.” The two do not have to be mutually exclusive. The contrast forces creative solutions. The Moon in Capricorn (cardinal earth) tilts the argument to the earth side of things. Use the day to be practical and expect that to feel like an adventure.

Moon in Capricorn
Thursday, April 28. Mercury in Taurus stations retrograde today. Mercury’s mission is to help us reframe our assumptions. We have the opportunity to learn something about the way we humans process information. Taurus inspires careful but obstinate communication styles. It can be hard to break free of the ways we’ve always thought about things. The potential is to let go of that rigidity. The way to this breakthrough, however, may be the unsettling experience of familiar reality not working the way it’s supposed to. The transition into the Mercury retrograde period may not go smoothly today due to the Moon in Capricorn making stressful contacts with Pluto in Capricorn and Uranus in Aries. Be extra patient. There is plenty to be upset about.

Moon enters Aquarius 2:07 am CDT
April 29—Last Quarter Moon Moon: Evaluating. The body knows what the body knows. As we begin to evaluate the experiences and actions of this lunar cycle, remember to listen to what your body knows. The pattern of this season is the pulsation from fire’s initial burst of life to the steadiness of earth’s relentless support. Notice how this shows up in your life, in your passions. The seasons are teaching us.

The Moon in Aquarius gives perspective to individual desires. We ask, what is the greater purpose? How do my gifts contribute to the whole? What is the vision for the collective? Against this backdrop, Venus leaves Aries fire behind and enters Taurus, one of the signs that Venus rules. Feel that relentless support of the earth open up and welcome your desires. Our bodies are wise. Pleasure is important. The effort does not have to be large, but spend time honoring your body’s desire and wisdom for the next three and a half weeks while Venus is in Taurus.

Moon in Aquarius
Saturday, April 30. The tricky edge of this day is noticed in the contrast between feelings of efficient competency and out of control chaos. If we can surf the waves of the unexpected, we may be able to harness the good vibrations between the Moon in Aquarius and Saturn in Sagittarius to be brilliantly productive. The Moon, however makes a challenging square to retrograde Mercury in Taurus. This is where we need to be adaptable. The plans may be solid, the thought behind them may be inspired, but Mercury has other plans. Look for a teaching from the Trickster today.

Moon enters Pisces 9:33 am CDT
Sunday, May 1. Calendar Beltane. The cross-quarter holy day of Beltane has been traditionally celebrated on May 1. Another moment to celebrate the mid-point of the Taurus season will be when the Sun reaches 15 degrees Taurus on May 4. Those who celebrate this holy day, honor the Earth’s fertility. As the fixed earth sign, Taurus stands for embodied wisdom. Beauty is the messenger of this wisdom. What brings you joy? What does the Earth teach you today? Pisces influence is strong today. The Sun in Taurus forms an encouraging sextile with Neptune in Pisces. The Moon in Pisces makes another sextile to Venus in Taurus. We open to beauty and to expansive connection with others. The heart leads the way into a celebration of the renewing powers of the Earth. At the end of the day (CDT) the Moon makes a square to retrograde Mars in Sagittarius. Passions rise. There may be argument or conflict, but at the end of such a day, these conflicts can serve to remind us what we hold sacred and what we most care about.

Follow the Moon: Forecast for April 18, 2016 — April 24

Get out your brooms and dustbins, folks. Spring cleaning is underway. Relationships may need clearing. Venus in Aries is calling the shots this week. What have you wanted to get off your chest? How have you felt restricted by social expectations? Do you feel a build up of self-censoring that needs clearing?  Something may be a little off socially, and there is a reason. Venus is in the sign of her detriment—Aries. This means that the planet of our social graces has run out of nice. The cupboards are plum out of diplomacy. All the leftovers of failed attempts at harmony are rotting in the corners. It is time for Venus to do some spring cleaning with the element of fire. We may notice flames burning through the places we feel stuck in our relationships. Venus in Aries burns like a prairie fire cleaning out the clutter and making way for renewal. This can feel alarming or awkward if we are normally people pleasers. The question becomes, how do we burn away the clutter while keeping an open heart and mind? Venus in Aries can spark conflict but can also be a bright burst of honesty. Fire can bring light. It is time to notice energy. Pay attention to anger. Accept a little more brutal honesty. Appreciate the chance to reenergize the Venus realms of beauty, joy, and love.

Venus in Aries starts out helpfully on Monday with trine to Saturn in Sagittarius. This is an earnest energy of commitment. The hope is for productive fires that bring illumination and cleansing to our associations. However, this aspect happens under the influence of Pluto stationing retrograde. Pluto, attached as it is to our subconscious needs and desires, can bring to light the ways we feel those needs and desires have been thwarted by others. The ground shifts during a Pluto station. Passions and fears can be released. Under this tense influence, Venus makes a square to Pluto on Tuesday, the same day that the Sun enters Venus-ruled Taurus. We may feel that the Earth is literally trying to communicate with us. If we don’t listen, we may miss out on a valuable relationship with the Earth. And since the planet of aggression, Mars, has also recently stationed retrograde, simmering resentments could boil over. Remember the purifying fire that brings renewal.

Venus in Aries can be blunt but is not mean-spirited. What do you need to say or do to bring more honesty to your relationships? Sharing your fears can create intimacy. After the intense contact with Pluto, Venus will conjoin Uranus in Aries at the Full Moon on Friday, April 22. On a basic level, Venus rules relationship and money. As we dig a little deeper, we discover that Venus gives us a reason to love, and helps us to know our values. Under this layer, Venus reveals the creative force of attraction and connection. Venus energy draws the things we desire to us. When this energy is blocked or confused, life doesn’t sparkle quite as much. We lose a deep appreciation for the world around us. Uranus acts as the awakener of Venus energy this week. Under this influence be courageous and foolish. Dare to love the world around you.

Forecast for April 18, 2016 — April 24

Moon in Virgo
Monday, April 18.
Mars and Pluto have a lot in common. They are both co-rulers of Scorpio, and due to that association, both have a dark, complex side. Mythically, Pluto rules the underworld. Mars is the hero who dares to enter the underworld to retrieve wisdom. The pull of the underworld is noticeable today with Pluto stationing retrograde. Yesterday, Mars made its retrograde station. A lot of energy just changed direction. It will take time to adjust. Don’t be surprised if you don’t want to get out of bed today. When we do, the Virgo Moon demands we be productive, or at least stop making so many messes. Simplify your life. Give yourself enough space to follow your body’s needs for balance and wellbeing. For a portion of the day, a grand earth trine aspect pattern reminds us how important the earth’s support is. The trine between Venus in Aries and Saturn in Sagittarius encourages renewal and commitment in relationships of all types.

Moon enters Libra 6:24 am CDT
Tuesday, April 19.
Sun enters Taurus. On the day that the Sun enters Venus-ruled Taurus, Venus in Aries forms a square to Pluto in Capricorn. Earth energy is magnified by the still reverberating Pluto station of yesterday. Open all your senses, including your ability to sense how the Earth is sending pulse beats of information from far below. It is good to remember that we are animals too, and we can return to our animal wisdoms. Instinct tells us that relationship with the living Earth is vital to our health and wellbeing. The Venus square to Pluto brings a greater sense of needing to bring vital life force back into all our relationships. The Moon in Libra only increases the belief that relationship is everything.

Moon in Libra
Wednesday, April 20.
The Moon in Libra is focused on balancing all things. We become acutely aware of anything that is too weighted to one side. With Mars and Pluto stationing retrograde irecently, we could be feeling a need to release built-up pressures. The Moon will form a square to stationary Pluto in Capricorn and will oppose Venus in Aries. Passion or anger could be the pressure valve that brings balance back. Being mindful as you seek to bring more clarity to your relationships will help you navigate a tricky day. Emotions may be high.

Moon enters Scorpio 7:17 pm CDT
Thursday, April 21.
Although passions may not be as high today as they were yesterday, that doesn’t mean we are out of the danger zone. This week, Venus influence brings awareness to what is missing from our relationships. With Venus in Aries, we may be more blunt in our social interactions. This could bring up hurt feelings. With the emphasis on Pluto and Mars stationing retrograde recently, those feelings could be connected to wounds from the distant past. The Full Moon tomorrow may be a good time to release bitterness. Venus in Aries offers the opportunity to burn through such obstacles.

Moon in Scorpio
April 22—Full Moon Moon: Illuminating. The Full Moon provides a chance to see what has been renewed by Aries fire. On April 7 at the Aries New Moon, a dream was kindled. Perhaps it was clear to you, what the fires of renewal were bringing back to your life. Perhaps like me, you have just been observing the fluctuating energies of spring. This has been a lunar cycle of contrasts. The desire to emerge into the light of day is strong during the Aries season. This natural impulse has been tempered by the opposite impulse to go back under the surface. Mars, the ruler of Aries, has stationed retrograde. For the next 11 weeks, the ordinary Aries drive to move forward quickly will be tempered by this contrary need to go slowly deeper.

Full Moons are always times of contrast since the Sun and Moon oppose each other. The opposition between Taurus (Sun) and Scorpio (Moon) emphasizes the contrast between the living world of the greening Earth and the decaying world below the surface. These extremes depend entirely upon each other. Perhaps this is the lesson of contrasts. What seems to be incompatible is actually two sides of the same thing. The cycle of life, death, and rebirth teaches us how to hold complexity and contrast. This capacity creates a greater ability to be in relationship, not only with other humans but the living Earth as well.

Venus in Aries conjoins Uranus today. This week, Venus may have urged you to clean up blockages in your relationships. Now, with the conjunction with Uranus, Venus encourages bold moves to renew our connections with others. Venus in Aries can be awkward socially. However, the intent is not to be mean but to be authentic. How can we be in relationship while being true to ourselves? Perhaps we receive an answer to this question today.

Moon in Scorpio
Saturday, April 23
. A sense of wholeness settles over the season. The Full Moon yesterday re-opened the link between the emerging life above and the decaying world below. Of course they are connected! This is the secret source of peace—to know that life and death are inseparable and necessary to each other. The Moon in Scorpio opposes Mercury in Taurus. Emotion and mind are seeking wholeness too. Notice when you are overly attached to your own truths. Investigate the emotional source.

Moon enters Sagittarius 7:46 am CDT
Sunday, April 24.
The fog clears a bit more. The Moon in Sagittarius encourages clear vision. The focus is on discovery of truth and meaning. What are you learning? What do you want to learn next? The world is large. The answers are out there. This fire sign encourages a rekindling of spirit. Be that spark.

Follow the Moon: Forecast for April 11, 2016 — April 17

Mars is putting on the brakes this week. On April 17, Mars will station retrograde at 8 degrees Sagittarius. After that, the red planet will appear to move backwards against the stars until June 29, when it will station direct at 23 degrees Scorpio. We aren’t done with the retrograde journey until Mars returns to 8 degrees Sagittarius on August 22. What happens immediately after that may be the signature transit of this retrograde cycle. Mars comes into conjunction with Saturn at 9 degrees Sagittarius on August 24. There is a Saturn theme to this retrograde journey. Figuring out Saturn will be useful as we follow Mars on the quest.

The retrograde journeys of Mercury, Venus, and Mars have a mythic quality. Both Mercury and Venus disappear into the rays of the Sun when they are retrograde, inviting stories of mythic meetings in the underworld. Mars, however, is seen opposing the Sun during retrograde. It is most visible in the evening sky at this time. It also appears brighter because it is closer to the Earth. The Mars mythic journey describes a journey of challenge—perhaps a hero’s journey—to discover a truth, receive a gift, turn our actions around to benefit the world. This could be a story of individuation, discovery of self, a reclaiming of one’s passion or fire. Mars is about passion, desire, and will. During this retrograde cycle, those qualities may be challenged and through that challenge be reborn.

The Saturn influence on this hero’s journey. Mars is mirroring the retrograde journey taken by Saturn last summer. During that time, Saturn stationed retrograde in the early degrees of Sagittarius and turned direct in the late degrees of Scorpio. Just like Mars is about to do. If Mars is on a quest, perhaps this planet is going back to re-experience Scorpio lessons in preparation for a meeting with Saturn in August. Perhaps, through this journey, we will learn more about what Saturn’s transit of Sagittarius is about. Saturn always directs us to the pointed lessons of the moment. Through contrasting experiences of obstruction and determination, Saturn offers the chance to build lasting structures that help us through life. Saturn can feel like a carrot dangling from a stick that keeps getting pulled away just when we get near. It can feel cruel. I’ve come to believe that with Saturn, the trick is not to play the game of unworthiness. We already deserve the carrot. If we believe that, then Saturn offers some excellent tips in how to enjoy that carrot to the fullest.

What is the Sagittarius carrot that Saturn dangles before us? Perhaps: That we can be bold in the pursuit of truth? That we can be both discerning and hopeful? That we can dream bigger? That all deserve freedom and agency? Sagittarius is the mutable fire sign. It lights up the sky with meaning. While Saturn is here, there is some truth we are meant to pass along. And perhaps, many truths we are meant to give up. When Mars joins Saturn in August, we’ll know better how we want to pass along this flame.

Forecast for April 11, 2016 — April 17

Moon in Gemini
Monday, April 11. The Gemini Moon brings a whiff of spring’s desire to reach out, connect, start something new. The day starts under the influence of Saturn opposing the Moon, however, so it takes a while for the light-hearted quality of Gemini to really get into full swing. Try to be productive earlier in the day. Inspiration is high. By early afternoon, the will to do anything burdensome completely disappears. May the actual weather mirror this energetic weather where you live. Enjoy the day.

Moon enters Cancer 3:06 am CDT
Tuesday, April 12.
Water and fire dance today. The Temperance card from the Thoth Tarot deck  is a good inspiration for how this can work. If we temper passion with compassion, enormous creativity is harnessed. For water, the Moon in Cancer enfolds us in the need to nurture. This Moon contacts Neptune in Pisces (mutable water) to open hearts and intuition to truly feel what others are feeling. Mercury in Taurus (fixed earth) forms a sextile with Neptune, providing  grounded communication as we expand into feelings. The fire of the day comes from a trine between Venus in Aries and Mars in Sagittarius. Creativity is sparked by this contact. The contrast between empathy and impatience is a challenge to be more aware of energy and impact. Breakthroughs can happen today. Be alert to the possibilities.

Moon in Cancer
April 13—First Quarter Moon: Manifesting. The theme of working with the gifts of water and fire continue today. (See yesterday’s forecast.) The Moon in Cancer (cardinal water) forms a square to the Sun in Aries (cardinal fire). The opening square between the Moon and Sun is the point in a lunar cycle when challenge produces results. The challenge to work effectively with both water and fire (emotion and passion) allows the seed dream planted at the New Moon in Aries on April 7 to suddenly emerge from dream into reality.

At the New Moon, I wasn’t sure what my intention for this lunar cycle would be. All I knew based on transits and nature of the Aries season was that a dream was catching fire. Fire kindles new life. Passion helps us know how to follow the energy. Without temperance of some kind, fire can burn out too quickly or be misdirected. The dream may not have enough resources for the complete growing cycle of manifestation. Water, emotional connection and knowing, builds resiliency when balanced with action. At this phase of the Moon notice the pulsation between passion, which may show up as impatience or anger, and compassion, which may show up as grief or even despair. The dream catching fire for me this Aries season is a dream of passionate and compassionate resiliency. I am both impatient with the things that need changing right now, and compassionate about the fears that arise when such change is contemplated. You may feel like you are stuck between such a rock and a hard place today as the Moon moves from a confident connection with Jupiter in Virgo to challenging contacts with Pluto in Capricorn and Uranus in Aries. There is no shame if we vacillate between a desire to be bold and a need to be safe. Both are necessary to the emergence of this season.

Moon enters Leo 8:53 am CDT
Thursday, April 14. The Moon in Leo (fixed fire) gives an energetic boost to the waxing phase of this Moon cycle. This is a good chance to appreciate the joy of living. Life force flows freely. The positive vibes are enhanced by a trine between Mercury in Taurus (fixed earth) and Jupiter in Virgo (mutable earth). This connection is excellent for grounded, clear communication. Mental focus is strong and can be applied to any projects that involve the tangible world. The dreams of this lunar cycle become clearer. This is time to plan and manifest.

Moon in Leo
Friday, April 15. The day begins with a grand fire trine aspect pattern that infuses the day with more energy, more action, and possibly more impatience. The Moon in Leo, Mars in Sagittarius, and Venus in Aries are working together to ignite the day with creativity. Later in the day, the Moon trines Saturn in Sagittarius, which helps us feel productive and focused. A contrasting influence to the day comes from Mercury in Taurus (fixed earth). Mercury makes a square aspect to the confident Leo Moon, asking us to slow down. Mercury also makes a quincunx to Saturn. This aspect reinforces the subtext of the day to check and recheck impulsive actions and decisions. Although Mercury’s influence may feel frustrating, we benefit from thinking twice before acting.

Moon enters Virgo 6:23 pm CDT
Saturday, April 16. The Moon will enter productive Virgo later today. Before that happens, take the opportunity to feed your flames under the last few hours of Leo Moon inspiration. Fire needs tending. What is fire to you? How do you experience life force energy? Fire creates a generous and creative response to life. It is vital for life. Tend your fire by play, activities that inspire, physical movement, and joy early in the day to build up energetic reserves for the next three days of Virgo Moon influence. This is the best way to engage with Virgo’s desire to perfect and improve. The quincunx aspect between Venus in Aries (cardinal fire) and Jupiter in Virgo (mutable earth) further emphasized the contrast between the desire to leap into life full force and the desire to pull back, be careful and correct. Jupiter in Virgo has been encouraging us to take care of health concerns. Well-being may be understood today as an appropriate balance between fire and earth.

Moon in Virgo
April 17—Gibbous Moon: Perfecting. Fire impulses have been tempered this week by water and earth contrasts. At times you may have experienced this as discouragement or frustration. Other times, you may have wondered where all your energy went and if you could get it back. What have you learned through this tempering process? Fire is really the theme of this Aries lunar cycle. It is the element that fuels rebirth and helps us emerge from dormancy. Joy, excitement, and foolish daring are ingredients for the fires that get us going again. This phase of the Moon is often experienced as a tempering process. We are motivated to make small but important adjustments to perfect intention. With the Moon in Virgo, this need to adjust and perfect is more pronounced. I encourage you to step away from good/bad thinking and embrace the paradox of yes/and. Yes, fire needs free expression without constraint. And, earth’s pragmatic realism gives fire more freedom and focus. How does this contrast land in your body? How will it help you perfect your dreams of this lunation?

Mars in Sagittarius stations retrograde today. In the introduction to this week’s blog, I wrote that this mythic journey provides the opportunity to learn important lessons about the pursuit of meaning in our lives and the ways we hold our truths. Energetically, Mars moving retrograde for the next 11 weeks forces another tempering of fire and will. Resolve can strengthen as a result if we are able to discard the extraneous battles in our lives. Liberation may come from walking away from needless conflicts. Mars returns to Scorpio at the end of May. We will learn the deeper lessons about desire and will during the last portion of Mars retrograde.

The Moon in Virgo makes a square to stationary Mars, opposes Neptune in Pisces and conjoins Jupiter in Virgo. This pattern imprints the whole Mars retrograde journey. Over the past few weeks, these planets in mutable signs have opened the door to the ways we gather and process information. We’re in a fertile time of learning about ourselves and others. The mutable signs invite adaptation. Do you feel structures shifting? It is important to practice self-care for sensitive nervous systems at this time.

Today, Mercury in Taurus forms a supportive trine to Pluto in Capricorn. Use this transit to write or communicate, to clarify your thoughts, to declare your intentions for the spring season.

Follow the Moon: Forecast for April 4, 2016 — April 10

Jumping ahead to the next new thing is an unfortunate addiction in the U.S. We are constantly being bombarded with messages about the future, needing to be on top of the latest innovations, planning for progress that never quite comes. Many have lost touch with the gifts of pausing and letting feelings arise. We’ve become accustomed to numbing out the uncertainty or painful memories that can come from emptiness. This week, we may notice the tension between needing to linger a little longer in Pisces emptiness and jumping ahead into Aries action.

It isn’t as if moving forward is a bad thing. Astrology’s wisdom about appropriate action in appropriate seasons reminds us that at times, the right thing to do is to leap, even without a plan (Aries is good at that). But, geared as we are to the shiny and new, it is good to question ourselves, is this the time to take that leap? What business from this waning Pisces lunar cycle, which ends on April 7th, is still left for me to do? Appropriate action in the Pisces season is to release the past. At times this shedding can take longer than we think. Aries impatience may have us moving ahead into the spring season before we are ready. Notice where your heart really resides this week. Not every birth begins with a clap of thunder. Considering the emotional work of the past lunar cycle (made more poignant by two eclipses with Chiron conjunct the South Node and Saturn stationing retrograde in Sagittarius), it is OK to ease into spring’s awakening. If you can.

Uranus, the planet of awakening, plays a major role in the Aries lunar cycle coming up. When the Sun makes its annual conjunction with Uranus this week, it may be hard to remember the spaciousness of the previous lunar cycle. We are raring to go. Battles must be fought. Revolutions must be sparked. Under this antsy energy, Mars, the ruler of Aries, will station retrograde in Sagittarius on April 17. If we don’t watch it, ordinary frustrations could light bigger fires. Pluto stations retrograde the day after. The days right before the Full Moon on April 22 could be tense and brooding. Before the Aries lunar cycle is complete, Mercury will station retrograde too. All these planets turning retrograde after the Uranus/Sun conjunction could feel like needing to back up to undo impulsive choices or reconsider rash action. Perhaps the thing that helps temper impulsive acts that we later regret is to take care at the end of the Pisces lunar cycle—listen to what your heart says about letting the past truly go.

Forecast for April 4, 2016 — April 10

Moon enters Pisces 12:45 am CDT
April 4—Balsamic Moon: Surrendering. This Pisces lunar cycle comes to a close. What is left for you to surrender? Don’t be dismayed if you’ve reached weariness with this whole emotional release thing that has been going on this lunation. It is almost over. The Aries initiative begins in earnest this week with the next New Moon on April 7th. Before rebirth, allow for the pause that regenerates the soul. The Moon conjoins Neptune in Pisces today making this directive even more important. Grief may suddenly rise up. A desire to numb out or give up could too. Be gentle with yourself. The anxious contrast of the day comes from two aspects: Moon square Mars in Sagittarius and a quincunx aspect between the Sun in Aires and Jupiter in Virgo. One part of us is done with waiting, weighing our choices, being pragmatic. The other part is afraid we’ll plunge into something we won’t be able to get out of gracefully. The paradox is solved by trusting in our imperfections. Although it may not be prudent to plunge in yet, this tension is priming the pump for later this week when “the readiness is all.”

Moon in Pisces
Tuesday, April 5.
Spring weather can be variable. One moment it’s warm and luscious, the next a wintery chill comes in on the wind. Today is like that. Variable. The Moon in Pisces starts the day with a square to Saturn in Sagittarius. All is seriousness. The Sun in Aries contributes to the earnest tone by making a trine to Saturn. If fire (Aries and Sagittarius) is a resource, then we want to use it responsibly. What adjustments do you need to make to enhance vital energy? Then the weather shifts again. Venus enters Aries. We are less concerned with pleasing others and feel OK about pleasing ourselves first. Less caretaking and more assertiveness is born with this shift that lasts for the next three and a half weeks. However, this isn’t the only change in weather. The Moon conjoins Chiron in Pisces. Remember, the Moon is still in sensitive Pisces, right? Venus’ self-assertion might also cause hurt feelings. Luckily, Mercury’s ingress into grounded Taurus provides a pragmatic point of view to negotiate uncertain weather.

Moon enters Aries 1:46 am CDT
Wednesday, April 6.
On the last day of the Pisces lunar cycle, which began on March 8, acknowledge something new about your intuition. These muscles have been developing this lunar cycle and they come in handy today as the Sun in Aries forms a square to Pluto in Capricorn. Something may be really bugging you. The source could be deep in your psyche or deep in the toxic power structures of our culture. It may be possible to bring what’s wrong to light. What if we believed that corruption is conquered by an open heart? What if we practiced that belief today? The Moon in Aries and Mars in Sagittarius give us the green light. Spring really dawns tomorrow with the Aries New Moon, but we feel frisky today.

Moon in Aries
April 7—New Moon: Dreaming. A dream is catching fire right now. It has been dormant in the darkness for a while. You may already know what it is. You may not have a clue, but life’s own momentum moves it out into the world. A dream is catching fire. This dream is quite possibly about the intersection between the world’s great need for transformation and your own personal need for authenticity. There can be such an intersection, where our personal paths of becoming lead to changing the world. The metaphor of a butterfly’s beating wings causing a hurricane on the other side of the Earth applies to this moment of small actions and intersections. We just don’t know where it will take us, what affect it will have. But a dream is catching fire with the joining of the Sun and Moon in Aries.

This Sun and Moon are lit up by Uranus in Aries in the chart for the New Moon. Since 2010, when Uranus entered this sign, revolutions have caught fire all around the world. We are still in upheaval. Something is trying to awaken. Uranus is prodding. If you could wake up to one thing this lunar cycle, what would you wish it to be? How do you want to greet the new day? What do you long to pass along to future generations? Let that answer be your wake up call.

Pluto is guardian of the shadows until we are ready to look into them. Pluto presents in two ways. One way is obsessive and controlling. The other is liberating and revitalizing. The side of Pluto each of us experiences has to do with how ready we are to look into the shadow. At this New Moon, Pluto in Capricorn forms a square to the Sun and Moon. This isn’t a test of how good we are, or how evolved we are. This aspect is a chance to check in with our own shadows, to know ourselves in all our parts and be renewed by soulful acceptance. Pluto is preparing to station retrograde on April 18. Even as Aries calls us to emerge into the light, it is good to remember the underworld we’ve recently emerged from.

Mars in Sagittarius is also preparing to station retrograde on April 17. Every two years, Mars replays the mythic journey of the hero leaving behind the ordinary world to seek something deeper within. These inward journeys fuel the dreams that are catching fire this Aries season.

For some lunar cycles, I know right away the intention I want to work for that cycle. For others, need more time. I call this phase when the lunar cycle begins, the Dreaming Moon. Sometimes it is best to let an intention percolate through dreams and desires until we know it. I know a dream is catching fire. I plan to watch the dream ignite and see what it wants to tell me. How will you begin this cycle? How will you engage your dreams?

Moon enters Taurus 1:10 am CDT
Friday, March April 8.
There’s just enough passion and just enough pragmatism in this day to get things done. The Sun in Aries approaches a conjunction with Uranus tomorrow. That’s the part about passion, especially passion for change. The Moon enters Taurus and conjoins Mercury right away. That’s the part about pragmatism. Words matter. What we say and how we say it will make a difference in manifesting the change we desire.

Moon in Taurus
Saturday, April 9
. Let’s get to work. The Moon in Taurus is willing to do whatever is necessary to begin the personal and global revolutions we are ready for. The Sun conjoins Uranus in Aries today. I imagine this is the real beginning of spring. The New Moon in Aries is past and this spark of awakening gets us moving. The Moon provides just enough grounding to help us steady the course. The trine between the Moon and Pluto in Capricorn lends us power and strength. What is the dream catching fire for you today? It may not feel quite as impossible as it once did.

Moon enters Gemini 12:59 am CDT
Sunday, April 10.
With the Moon in Gemini, all four mutable signs are activated by a grand cross aspect pattern. Some of the orbs are large (the distance from exatitude) but the effect will be noticeable. Mutable signs have been preparing us to sense and understand more and more information. Each element has its way of understanding—through our minds, emotions, and through our physical and energetic bodies. It is easy to be overwhelmed. The Moon creates a need to learn, Mars in Sagittarius is questing for the truth, Neptune in Pisces erases the boundaries between us, and Jupiter in Virgo attempts to bring health through integrated wellness practices. There is a lot going on. Added to the tension is a perplexing quincunx between Mercury in Taurus and Mars. Expansive belief meets skepticism. Mercury has to work extra hard to lend a sense of groundedness to the day, but that is just what we need. Don’t believe everything you think.
