Pagans at Greek Temple

Today, is the first of three times, this year, that Jupiter will square Uranus. (see entry for January 18). Jupiter is strong right now. It is traveling through Sagittarius, the sign that Jupiter rules. Jupiter entered Sag. on November 25, 2006 and will stay in that sign until December 19, 2007. One year of exalted Zeus! (Zeus is the Greek name for Jupiter.) Uranus is the planet of revolution. We can expect sudden changes as these two planets come into challenging contact. Today, my newspaper carried this short story: (from Associated Press)

An Unabashed Return to Greek Roots
A clutch of modern pagans honored Zeus at a 1,800-year-old temple in the heart of Athens on Sunday—the first known ceremony of its kind held there since the ancient Greek religion was outlawed by the Roman empire in the late 4th century. [I can attest to the fact that this is a big deal for the Greeks. I once traveled to Greece with Demetra George and a group of goddess-worshipping women. A security guard actually told us to stop singing on the Acropolis because “Greece is Christian, we do not worship the old gods here.”] …
The group [worshipping at the temple], which called on the Olympian Zeus (“King of the gods and the mover of things”) to bring peace to the world, ignored a ban by the Culture Ministry, which declared the site off limits to any kind of organized activity to protect the temple. But participants did not try to enter the temple, and no officials sought to stop the ceremony. “We are the Greeks and we demand from the government the right to use our temples, said high priestess Doreta Peppa.

And so it begins. What rights do we dare to claim for ourselves under this transit? Be bold! Jupiter, mover of things, is on the scene. Uranus, the darer of things, is joining in.

Way to go, Doreta! I wish you success.
